Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I'm going, and showing my Wyandottes. I'm also going to the PNPA show this month.

I might go still not sure yet.

3 and 1/2 hr drive for me -- one way -- unsure if I'll go or not.

I'd go in a flat hot hurry if I knew I'd be able to pick up a decent number of New Hampshire pullets.

It's three hours for me, too. I might go, but I'm not showing since they won't let one coop in and out the same day.

I'm going; the girlchild asked if there was a chicken show she could take me to, and I have a rooster to pick up from Hillsboro OR which will be in Vancouver on the 20th, anyway. Less travel time, and less dangerously close to, say, St. Paul or Scapoose.

Hey, thinkin' (a dangerous pasttime for me) about that dang wheelbarrow. Brought to mind how my knees hurt at times and my back. This led me to think about bathing my dog and maybe a chicken or two. Why not have the water in the wheelbarrow, a chair next to it? No bending the knees and besides I like it when I can work sitting on my butt.

I can see it now, Mikeys wash station for doggies/chickens. A hose hook up with a shower nozzle, a bar to hold a towel or two and of course a cooler wtihh a couple of cool beverages. Yep, it is getting more clear in my crystal ball.

Love It! So unique I'm sure the news media would pick it up and do a story on you and you'd have orders coming out your ears, then you'd have to get CR in on the manufacture and accessories!!! Obviously a perfect idea!

Hi there. Concur on the wet feed - love it, much less mess and waste. However, does anyone have a suggestion as to how to prevent chickens from getting dirt in their food? Mine don't want to eat their wet feed if one of them has scratched up some dirt/leaves/etc in the chow bowl and I find myself picking out any dirt/sand. OK, maybe it is me that doesn't like the mess they do to their food. I only have 4, and right now they eat out of a soup bowl hanging on side of run off a teahook. Maybe another type feeder would be better?

If you set the feed up on a concrete block, so it's maybe 8" off the ground the chickens can still eat but less dirt gets kicked in. Are your chickens full grown or still half-pints? I have both and I've had to come up with a couple different configurations to accommodate their changing size and various pens.

Jess - I'm not positive, but I think the SS get a lot more mottling after their juvie molt. (Who just said that?)

Speaking of Juvenile Molt, I've forgotten what ages they molt throughout their first year. Can someone please tell me again? Thanks!

well, our coop is finally just a day away from real completion (Hooray!) Anyone know about chicken behavior?
I have one New Hampshire red who is trying to be the alpha
and does not let my Faverolles have a minute's peace - not really extreme chasing or pecking but keeping away from food etc.
Would it help to move the shy Favs into the coop a few hours before this aggressive chicken ? Would that tell the aggressor that the Favs were there first and have at least equal standing? Or does any of this matter? thanks for any help.

Congrats on finishing your coop! You'll be posting pics, right?!?!
You've gotten some good suggestions on handling the bully. I'll just add a small idea -- we use a spray bottle or squirt gun and squirt the offender whenever they are getting too aggressive. Kids love helping, too. Of course you can't be there all the time so it's just an extra "layer" of behavioral training.

I live in the Greenwood neighborhood and just finished my coop. One of my neighbors has started complaining before we have gotten any chickens. They are concerned about noise and rats.Has anyone else helped smooth over their neighbors. When laying begins, I will be happy to give them some eggs. Neither of these things seems like a real concern as chickens make a great sound compared to cars, barking dogs, and the construction the same complaining neighbors are doing. Of course we don't want rats. The feed will be in a sealed container inside the house. Our feeder is a PVC pipe that prevents most of the feed from being spread around. We also have a cement floor to prevent predators from burrowing. I don't want my chicken dreams cut short, if anyone has any past experience, please let me know.

Thanks!

VF.... I'm absolutely certain that whathisface said there are going to be scads of New Hampshire pullets available from several outstanding breeders! And I'm pretty sure I heard there's going to be a free with a 50# bag of ultra premium feed included!!!

Just kidding folks.... I'm just trying to make sure Dave wants to make that long drive to Vancouver! But sssshhhhhhh, don't let the cat out of the bag, ok? ;-)

So I've got my quarantine coop with the two buggy birds and my big coop with my bug-free girls. They're well-separated, so airborne things aren't an issue. However, moving from coop to coop raises a question or two. I already plan on washing my hands and switching clothes when I move from buggy coop to non-buggy coop. Is that sufficient? Do I need to shower to eliminate any possibility of transmission?

can't you work in the non buggy coop first, then go to the buggy coop, then change/shower, etc? Or am I missing something?

Well it's been a busy couple of days around here! Yesterday I took my DiL and her two little girls to Cowgirlgrace's to get 2 Wheaten Ameraucanas. Of course it had to rain again, but not so bad that we couldn't stop and chat for a while. Lyn was kind enough to catch of few of the chicks that were showing their colors enough to be probable pullets. They're super cute and my DGDs loved getting to pick out their chicks. Their names are Juliet and Maisy. Now Juliet and Maisy will spend the next 10 days with me, so I get the fun of having chicks for a while longer, wheee!

My chicks have gotten SO big now. Even though the weather is wet and nasty out there I spent my first few hours this morning making a few more mods to get them out there NOW! I figured out how to get the light installed safely since it may get into the 30s again this week (no small task). And how to better secure the vent in the front of their dog house coop (I just wasn't sure what I'd put in the other day was strong enough). Then I had to figure out how to get power to the light. And I decided I wanted to construct a "daytime door" so they aren't in total darkness 24/7 while they're locked in there for the next few days. You'd laugh your head off if you saw what I made!!! But I'm comfortable that it will keep them secure and let in light. Then I had to rig up something for water. Their nipple waterer can't hang inside the dog house coop and the other waterer is in with DGDs new chicks. If it works I'll take a picture and post it later.

This afternoon I'm meeting SarahKatie to deliver my little roo named Dash. It's time for him to join his new family before he gets any bigger. I'll miss him, but it's good.

Gee... guess I'd better get a few of my regular chores done around here and keep an eye on all my little darlings!!!

Catch you all later!

Quote: FWJ; a little bit harsh don't you think? This is very unlike you, perhaps you're having a bad day! It's nearly always much easier and nicer if one can be friendly to a neighbour, BEFORE resorting to the "harder" line.

Even if it is legal to have chickens, a friendly gift of eggs can go a long way to making peace. And you never know when you might want that neighbour's help sometime. I'd much rather have friends than enemies.
