Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

New here to this thread...but not new to WA. I grew up here, spent 15 years in SD and have been back again for 5 years. I have a small flock of mixed layers and have Silkies and Barnevelders in the incubator.

Once they are grown up my mixed flock will go and I will keep those two breeds. I have two coops so I can keep two flocks seperated. I've owned Silkies for a few years but lost all my originals to a predator January 1st.

I also have a horse and a pony and a couple of goats that I milk every day. Oh, and barn cats, of course.

Anway, nice to "meet" other WA chicken people!

I love them too! And they do look a bit like Little Richard! LOL

Heidi is adorable!!! She looks and sounds quite a bit like our Cleo (EF)
alas Cleo has no cool pompadour

I'm terrible with abbreviations :) What is EF? Got pictures?

My broody Legbar's eggs have hatched. She decided that the glass pie pan with the nummies for the babies would be a great place for a family nap!!

Aw, sweet photo! See Ron's post below, he's looking for help for his broody hatched chick!
Heidi is just lovely, look at that hat and lepoard spot jacket!
The height of fashion.
Sorry she has to go.

Thank you - I know she went to a good home

And she gets to hang out with her own breed, and a Rooster!

Yes! She will be a happy girl, I am certain.

Help! Help!
I have a problem that I hope someone on here might be able to help me with! To make a long story short, I have a hen who was attack by one of my other hens last Wednesday and on Thursday she hatched ONE egg. She has some leg injury and can't walk or stand up. When she tries to falls over and often falls on her baby. She is trying very hard to take care of this little one, but is struggling. I really feel I should cull the mother hen, so I am looking for someone who is willing to adopt the baby or someone who could raise her with their own chicks and I will be willing to buy her back when she is feathered out. She was born around noon last Thursday and is healthy and active. The dad is a BL/RW and the mom is either a Buckeye or a Black Java. I'm pretty sure its the Java. Anyone interested please PM me!

Oh no, poor mama! I don't have any chicks currently, sorry! Hope someone else can help out!

This is a present from one of my co-workers

Love it!

Got it! I thought she litterally sat on them.

Do you not use a ramp from outside in? I think everyone is right about having it raised up. I was just thinking to save space essentially build 2 on top of each other. Do chickens often fall off their roosts? Like say I made the inside hight 5-6 feet and a low(18") roost on one wall, a med height roost on another and a high roost on another wall. Should I be worried that they would fall off at night for the high roost? Say 3-4' high?

Definitely use a ramp for them to go up to the coop, but it's funny to watch them. Much of the time they flap their wings a bit and jump half way up the ramp, as if to say "why walk when I can jump?" They won't fall off, perching on a roost is their natural habit. Can you imagine a robin falling off a branch? Same thing. I use a 2x4 turned so they sit on the wide side. That way when it's cold their feathers are down over their feet keeping them warm. Not a big issue here in W. Wash. but it makes me feel good to know their toes are warm. :-)

If you have only 4 chickens you don't need 3 different roosts. Take a peek at my coop by clicking on My Coop a few lines below my avatar. It's a bit bigger now because I extended it's length to the right, but little else. Four hens will easily roost on the perch. And I can reach every corner easily.

Way too many posts to respond to, nearly a hundred since I was on last night.
Nikki.... thanks for the clarification on the individuals doing the missionary work.
Prodigy.... yes it was definitely around in 1994 and for quite a few years after that even. It wasn't even the INTERNET back then, nothing at all like today, huh???

Loved the pics of the crested birds.... they kwak me up!

Hope everyone had a nice time at Third Place Books... hope I can make one of the later meets.

WELCOME to all the newcomers! Glad to have you here. Please join in.

Absolutley LOVE the Momma Hen in the Pie Plate!!!!!!

The hen is mostly fluffy feathers. The chicks all pile under her wings and snuggle up for warmth... lotsa room in there. :-)

You also asked about coop height, I think. My coop is 3' up off the ground and 3' tall on the inside with their perch about 18" above the floor. Since they have to take a flying leap to get up there I wouldn't want it any less than the 3'. I love having it 3' up off the ground because it makes it very easy to clean and the area underneath gives them shelter. Plus it's high enough I can get under there if needed. As opposed to some that are only 2' off the ground, for instance.

Had to laugh! My coop is 2' off the ground, and with my awful knees, crawling under is NOT an option! Fortunately, my daughter loves grubbing around in the coop area, so she's always willing to help. Don't know what I'll do when she gets older and less willing!

Glad all the "sturm und drang" is gone. Good that we can be a strong "family" here. I'm really hurting right now - no chickens. No chicks or babies. My Barnevelder went to his new hoe today. Luckily, I will able able to get some chicks later this sommer.

Did I miss something?? Where did the chickens go?

I'm sorry they're all gone! What made you get rid of the ones you had? Or was it predators? If you need laying hens I have a couple I don't mind parting with, let me know if I can help!
