Must have, even tho my husband has only held it once... The kids and I take them out a few times a day because I want them use to the kids... I am hoping by doing so they wont chase after the kids when they get bigger...

I have a problem that I hope someone on here might be able to help me with! To make a long story short, I have a hen who was attack by one of my other hens last Wednesday and on Thursday she hatched ONE egg. She has some leg injury and can't walk or stand up. When she tries to falls over and often falls on her baby. She is trying very hard to take care of this little one, but is struggling. I really feel I should cull the mother hen, so I am looking for someone who is willing to adopt the baby or someone who could raise her with their own chicks and I will be willing to buy her back when she is feathered out. She was born around noon last Thursday and is healthy and active. The dad is a BL/RW and the mom is either a Buckeye or a Black Java. I'm pretty sure its the Java. Anyone interested please PM me!
Wow, crazy weather day at our house today!! This morning it very lightly rained off and on, so Logan got to ride his pony during one of the breaks. DD and I took turns on him for a while, to see what kind of cues he knows. He seems to know some, but does not like to turn to the left. I think he has only been used for leadline for a very long time. He also is very stubborn. We will be working on that. Logan did great though. After Rhyan and I had worked Patch a little bit, we took the leadrope off and let Logan ride to the barn, with us on either side. Then, I played with the chicks for a while. I let the 4 biggest littles into gen pop and they are doing fine. The last batch should be ready in a couple of days. We let the big horses into the pasture and tied the pony out to graze for a little bit. No sooner were they all outside, we got pelted with really strong hail. Then my dad came over and I made us all burgers for an early Sunday dinner. Now the sun is shining brightly, just in time for it to set. Gotta love Western Washington. For some reason today, I am feeling especially thankful for the blessings I have been given.
Not to keep things going, but I just have to say that while the potential for things to get ugly was there,(as is in most situations where there is a diverse crowd), I did not feel that anybody was "not playing nice" this morning. I did not detect any animosity from anybody, they were just giving their point of view. We all have different beliefs and morals and each person is entitled to state their take on things. And from where I was sitting, that appeared to be what was going on. Just my 2 cents.

Dang!! In trying to get caught up, I totally forgot about my question. I keep reading things about people having a trio. So, if I decide to get some company for my Silkie roo, do I need to get 2? Also, I have a frizzle Cochin bantam. How long before I can tell if it is a boy or girl? The assorted bantam bin is straight run, so I have no idea on the Polish or the frizzle.
HELLO AND WELCOME. BUCKLE UP AND HOLD ON, THIS DANG FORUM MOVES RATHER RAPIDLY.New here to this thread...but not new to WA. I grew up here, spent 15 years in SD and have been back again for 5 years. I have a small flock of mixed layers and have Silkies and Barnevelders in the incubator.Once they are grown up my mixed flock will go and I will keep those two breeds. I have two coops so I can keep two flocks seperated. I've owned Silkies for a few years but lost all my originals to a predator January 1st.
I also have a horse and a pony and a couple of goats that I milk every day. Oh, and barn cats, of course.
Anway, nice to "meet" other WA chicken people!
Nice people with lots and lots of info here, and very helpful. There are "meet ups" and then there are meet ups with a "pot luck", not the usual forum with people hiding behind their keyboards. Lots of friends and looking for more.
How does the hen not squish the babies?? Maybe she thought they were going to get hungry during the napMy broody Legbar's eggs have hatched. She decided that the glass pie pan with the nummies for the babies would be a great place for a family nap!!

Prodigy.... yes it was definitely around in 1994 and for quite a few years after that even. It wasn't even the INTERNET back then, nothing at all like today, huh???

Absolutley LOVE the Momma Hen in the Pie Plate!!!!!!
The hen is mostly fluffy feathers. The chicks all pile under her wings and snuggle up for warmth... lotsa room in there.
You also asked about coop height, I think. My coop is 3' up off the ground and 3' tall on the inside with their perch about 18" above the floor. Since they have to take a flying leap to get up there I wouldn't want it any less than the 3'. I love having it 3' up off the ground because it makes it very easy to clean and the area underneath gives them shelter. Plus it's high enough I can get under there if needed. As opposed to some that are only 2' off the ground, for instance.

Do you not use a ramp from outside in? I think everyone is right about having it raised up. I was just thinking to save space essentially build 2 on top of each other. Do chickens often fall off their roosts? Like say I made the inside hight 5-6 feet and a low(18") roost on one wall, a med height roost on another and a high roost on another wall. Should I be worried that they would fall off at night for the high roost? Say 3-4' high?
