Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

it's late in the year for any dorkings from anyone I think, but that'd be the first call to make I think. But if Stromberg's got their start there they might be ok too.

Edit: hatcheries just make me nervous with how fast they ruin any breed they touch.

Indeed they can, and alas do a lot of times

From what I've been able to gather though, they mainly are being a go between for the show stock so they aren't actually hatchery'ing most of that stock.. at least that's what was said..

maybe I'll order a small bit from them now, and post pics, see what everybody thinks of them s.o.b. wise as they grow.. then I at least will have a better idea of which ones to make the next order from! ^^ *she tried to convince herself*

Here's the post http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/grd/3739830861.html

Here's my problem: we will be gone for a week the first week in June in San Diego..... A friend of my moms is coming to stay with my dog at night but that's all she'll do. The only way I could have the chicks is if someone could take them for me while I'm gone! plus I don't have ANY supplies for them

Do they make a ton of noise when you butcher them?

Hi again,
I'm wondering... and please don't take this as a criticism because it's definitely not... maybe you're getting the cart before the horse, a little bit. Our wonderful community here on the Washington thread are a DANG BIG BUNCH of ENABLERS, and they won't even *try* to deny it. And as we all know this chicken business is super contagious. It *might* be a good thing to step back and look at things with a fresh perspective. I am sympathetic because I tend to jump in with both feet when I get excited about a new plan. Luckily I have someone in my life who is supportive and realistic at the same time. It's saved me from a few big messes over the years.

I think you've jumped from 2 chickens to eight in just a couple of days, and you haven't had time to plan your coop and pen yet either, and getting it built might be a bit of a challenge from what you said earlier. Remember that chicks are *always* be available. Your family is a bit resistant right now. Maybe it would it be a little easier if you were to get some of the preparation done and then start getting your flock together. I'm really not trying to be a wet blanket... I love chickens and love to see families with them. And I'd like to see this be a totally positive experience for you.

If you do order from them I for one would be very curious to see how they turn out. I never thought I'd have any interest in this breed, but in the short 8 weeks I've had these guys...they've nearly completely won me over to the point where I might make them my new focus breed and just dabble in others.

Indeed, and the longer you have them.. the more they grow on ya
ya.gif
you are hereby warned, lol
I'll see if I can get the order in this weekend and keep everyone posted then!! (thinking them and a few more bantam birchin cochies....) my other favorite hug them and love them breed, lolz!

*EDIT* or should I order hatching eggs..
duc.gif
they're a lot cheaper (granted I may well be lucky to get 50% hatchability) and I only need to order 15 to ship, whereas I have to order 25 day olds...

I just can't wait til I have some extra cockerels to see if they taste as good as everyone swears they do! What's really impressive to me I know they're massive birds at full size, but the growth rate is great. My 8 week olds are all sorts of breeds, including breeds that will be much larger than the Dorkings at full growth, but none of them are growing as quickly. I'm liking the laid back attitude especially the cockerels have.

yes, and Hoss is an absolute prince, to humans, hens and chicks. When roosters threaten my daughter or I, he goes from mellow to "Watchit buddy"
gig.gif
runs from them usually, but if they threaten a chick or us.. rawr! Loves playing with babies and helping them find food. He totally has us mesmerized I do believe
love.gif

He also preens me from time to time

Have I mentioned I adore Hoss and Bertha
