Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Coming home this afternoon I wasn't feeling very well, so I decided to call in for a pizza for pick up, since it was on the way. I asked the kid who answered the phone, if I could have a thin crust "BACON, CHICKEN AND ARTICHOKE" pizza. He thought for a minute, then said

"Well, we only have a "CHICKEN, BACON AND ARTICHOKE" pizza. Do you want one of those?

No rewards for guessing which one I picked!

Busy day today. The kids had fun dressing up and trick-or-treating. Plus, we were able to visit with family.

We had to rescue the pumpkins from the front porch. DH caught some teenagers sneaking around in our neighbor's yard. We had a bunch of uncarved pumpkins sitting out for decoration, but they're meant to be food for the chickens. Didn't want those stolen!

Tomorrow the big girls will get to enjoy my tasty "chicken" pumpkin that I carved this afternoon.

How old do the chicks need to be to enjoy fresh pumpkin? Are my little ones too young (2 weeks)?

I hope everyone had a fun evening. I have lots of reading to catch up on - I'm all the way back on page 180. I'm tired and headed to bed... night all!

That's really cool!

CR, I read your "my coop". I was thinking you really stole chickens, then kept reading.

@Totalcolour, it is sad that youth can't function with things stated in a different order. Kinda like them not being to give change without the computer telling them what to give.
And 2 years ago Subway was advertising they had Gluten free alternatives...so we went to Chehalis & stopped at Subway, and myself all excited they may have gluten free breds now ???
When ordering...a BRUNETTE dingbat about 30 years old asked me WHAT ???
When I asked for their gluten free bread/meal.
I explained I was allergic to wheat.
"Oh, " she said..."Then do not eat the wheat bread !" ....{ DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!}}}
She further explained that they had other bread besides wheat bread,,,white, and sour dough....................................................

277 posts later, I sure hope I'm caught up! The chickens were roaming earlier and I went out to check on them and I think they cornered a squirrel and gave it a concussion. There was a squirrel halfway in a bush having issues climbing with the girls all around, and I thought maybe it was sick, but I got closer and it had what looked like a bloody peck-mark on it's head and was acting all wobbly like it was stunned...no other critters around and the wound looked fresh, so I'm assuming the chooks are the culprits. I know they'll go after mice and small birds, but I didn't know they'd attack a squirrel or why a squirrel would be getting close enough to get pecked in the first place when there's no food out.

I'm new to the whole backyard chicken thing, but I am from Washington so I thought I would stop over here and say hello.

Welcome!!!
Anyone driving on I-5, watch out for Fed-Ex Ground (Purple and green Fed-Ex logo) hauling doubles. I have had to call 911 twice in the last 3 weeks on them for swerving across lanes of traffic. 3 weeks ago the one I called on got pulled over and had a permanently revoked CDL, was in HOS violation, and was drunk( I know this because the trooper called me to thank me for reporting it). Last night, one almost ran my set of doubles off the road. Unfortunately he did not get pulled over( crossed into Oregon before troopers could find him). I don't know if they are pushing their drivers hard or what, just wanted to warn you all that this is trending with Fed-Ex.

Too scary, I'm on i-5 a lot, so I'll keep my eyes open.

You guys realize that you are already 1/3 the way to matching Oregon thread posts of 5012, in less than 2 weeks.

Crazy! No wonder I've had a hard time keeping up!

ugh. My poor chickens. Their coop is damp and stinky and they have no where dry to hang out near by. I attached a tarp to the deck and draped it over the coop and run, to hopefully dry it out a little and give them a drier spot to hang out on the patio. The coop and run both have roofs, but the inside is still seems so damp and miserable. I took all of the bedding out and will put new in a little while after it airs out. The sand in the coop did not work, it might work in the summer, but it got too wet this week.

I don't feel so bad for them when it rains lightly on and off--but this constant non stop pouring must be miserable.

Could you put up a couple tarps like pup-tents so they can run around anyway and have a couple sheltered areas? My girls love the rain, and just take breaks in the coop to shake off when they've had enough, but they're usually back out within 10 minutes...a lot of worms and good bugs surface when the ground's wet. And they're eating all the nice new grass that's popping up. Wood pellets are cheap and really absorbent, so they might be worth a try for your coop this winter.

Lunch gathering - here on the 8th November
(The day before my birthday!)

Okay folks, the date is set. If anyone would like to come, just let me know 2 days beforehand. Spouses welcome (Gary is coming with Robin).

It won't be really fancy - I'm healing form rotator cuff surgery, probably soup and cold cuts and cheese. But it will be fun to see each other and catch up. I'll do some GF, and Robin is bringing some too. If there are any vegetarians, let me know so I can make appropriate animal-less soup.

I'm on the Westside of Oly, pm for phone and address if you don't already have it! Looking forward to seeing you, and even if we haven't met, you are welcome too

I wish I could make it! I'm flying to Cali for a convention that weekend...maybe I'll be able to catch the next one.

Too cool! I'm just imagining some fried backstrap. sausage and jerky...so good! Congrats!

Quote: Well, I guess I'm missing it then! Do tell . . . ?
Well you see technically the first one would have more bacon while the second would have more chicken . I know it's kind of like what's more dangerous a barrel half full of gasoline or a barrel half empty of gasoline?
I concur

This boy is big !
Heart & liver the size of a small beef.................I helped drag him to the level, hauled him onto a tarp, tied down (raining buckets) hauled to the level after cutting the blackberries he lay in (then after walking back & getting the van...put guns in the van....hauled the buck out with the lawn mower tractor (again) and then DH & I hoisted him in the trailer (attached to the van) and hauled him home.
Then hung him, I skinned & gutted and have the heart & lver here and in the freezer.
I skinned him down to his arm pits and then said FI...You do the rest !!!
DH is a crack shot, but a city boy...and does not have a clue how to skin/gut/hang....................so, after I skinned him to his arm pits I said FI & I am going to bed !!!
(As soon as I pass the tick inspection, that is !!) There was some trophy ticks on this boy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Added: 8 points is a 4x4.....some older bucks can have 5 on one side & 3 or 4 on the other...this is an old buck....for a blacktail...

Check with your city for stuff like that - our Mayor told us we are to report all violations by calling 911 and requesting the city police department. If we don't request the city - dispatch might send county. Every incident in our city is a 911 call - even suspicious salesman. There's a huge problem with salesmen stopping by houses, then burglarizing them if no one answers the door. We were told to ask to see a permit, and if the salesman doesn't have one, call 911 and ask for city police.

hmm I thought that was for "emergency"s only?? Think of how the 911 system gets bogged down with calls that could be handled differently? just wondering, but thanks for the info

That's why I mentioned to check with your city. Every city handles the 911 system differently. During a recent crime prevention meeting in our neighborhood, our Mayor specifically asked us to call 911 and request the city PD dispatch (not the county) - he particularly referenced calling 911 for salesman that come through the area, and he warned us that most of the "salesman" that come through are casing the houses. People kept asking "but isn't that for emergency only?" and he kept telling us to understand that is what they want us to do. We could tell he was getting frustrated that people weren't "getting it" to call 911 for what may seem to be non-emergency. They are trying to get a handle on the crime in our neighborhood and want officers dispatched immediately. There were quite a few Police officers in the room and they all agreed with the Mayor that that is what they want us to do. If we call the Police Station directly, we'll usually get a voice mail and will get a return call a few days later. Our Mayor wants Police visibility in our neighborhood and they want officers to cruise through the area whenever anything suspicious is going on.

So... check with your city and find out how they want things like that reported.

Are you sure you want to spend the $ at a vet, or would you rather have some recs for antibiotics? How long has she been sneezing? Are other birds affected too?

Sure...if it's something that I could treat on my own I would totally give it a shot. She has been sneezing for at least a week, but she is eating and drinking and acting normal....my other two girls don't seem to be affected at all.

I'm not very experienced or knowledgable about chickens, I've just had them since July...but I've had two chickens at two different times sneeze frequently for 10 days or so..they seemed absolutely fine otherwise, and it just passed on its own. It seemed like a "dust up my nose" kind of sneeze, but it was fairly frequent. Since they seemed 100% OK otherwise, i did nothing..and they are fine. I wouldn't rush to medicate if they seem normal otherwise.
