Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Ok peeps I am finally home and (kind of) settled for the night. What s weekend!! Sales weren't too good. I did get to see several of ya. For anybody who came by and heard my near lack of voice..... Well yesterday was good by mid day today. I am able to make squeaks and that's about it. Now I also have a cough and stuffed up nose.

As for the show I had a good time. Except some how ended up coming home with 2 Salmon Fav pullets. Cool thing they are POL and we got a very first egg yesterday at the show and when we got home I found another egg in the crate. I also ended up with 10 chicks following me home. 2 BLRB, 2 ??, 1 CCL, 2 OE, 2 BCM and 1 Am x Orp.

I hope nobody gets this crud from me. It is not looking like this is gonna be fun. There were a couple others at the show who started to come down with similar.

Could it be pollen? I went outside today and our black truck looked yellow from all the tree pollen. I hope so. Hate being sick. Been down with a bad back myself the last week.

I am hatching Australian Spotted ducks with my first ducklings due tomorrow. It has been awhile since I used incubators to hatch eggs so I am kind of nervous about the hatch. I also have two hens sitting on nests so I will need to decide if I want to sell their babies or let them raise them so I can keep hens. I just sold a trio this weekend so I am down to 8 hens and 2 drakes. So far I have sold hatching eggs and adult ducks but these will be my first ducklings to sell. Hopefully this first hatch goes well.

Good luck on your hatch. Its always fun.

Does anyone know who or what birds won Best of Show and Reserve of Show for adults at the PNPA show? I wasn't able to stay long enough to see the results. I had to get back to the Spring Fair and judge Fitting & Showing.

I have $200 cash and I'm looking for a premade coop for Lucy to raise chicks in. Stinker won't be deterred this time either and I have no time to break her. Anyone have any ideas? Would love something with a small run attached so she can take her chicks out any time she wants.
I don't know about a coop; but it worked for me to break a chicken that wouldn't stop being broody (to the point that she was getting unhealthy). We used someone's advice here, and put her on top of a wire cage (so there is a lot of air flow under her) with a milk crate over the top to keep her confined. I left her up there all day while I was at work, when I came home and let her down she didn't run directly for the nest box. I was told it could take up to three days, but for her it took just one full day.

Good luck on your hatch! Hope you are going to take photos!

Does anyone here knit or crotchet or sew washcloths/handtowels and have a shop link they could send me? Or if you don't have a shop, perhaps tell me a bit about your product?

Does anyone here work with wood that would be interested in making wooden soap dishes? I can send you a link to exactly what I'm looking for, if you send me a message!

I'd like to add these items to my gift baskets in my Susdy Chick shop. I'd rather stock eco-friendly & locally handmade towels and washcloths and soap dishes, and you all are a crafty bunch!

Asking this again...I could have sworn someone on here said they make washclothes for fun...anyone? TIA!

Useless Flock is actually laying! Those @#$% useless Sumatras are finally laying, and are our rooster's new faves. I think they just took this long to mature (a whole year!) Their eggs have huge, orange yolks and with nicely firm whites. I'm glad I showed some patience for these 2 (or mercy...ptience...mercy....all the same in the end, I guess?)

Useless Chicken Prime is laying as well. Of course, she still has a tendency to lay while on the roost.....

And our Giant Fluffball Cochin gave us her first egg in months. She is nicely refeathered and looking gorgeous in that comical, catroonish cochin-hen way. What a sweety pie.

So, we had 4 eggs yesterday!

Broody fail, though--- and it was my fault! I feel terrible! Her nesting box was her regular laying box, and it was time to get her moved. So I made a nice pen for her in the coop, not putting a top on it, transferred her by scooping her up along with the hay, and placed her in her new home. Thought she was settling in, it was late in the evening and I thought that would be a good time. Not! She flew back into her nest box, or the one next to it with hay. A few days later, I cracked open the eggs. The first wasn't fertile (yay! was I off the hook?) But no.... the next egg was a ready-to hatch chick, dead. :( I console myself into thinking that it was bound to be a cockerel.......

Oh, well. I learned 2 things-- moving broodies is not easy.... and..... this hen finally proved herself as a good broody. I'll let her hatch more eggs next time.

In the meantime, how do you relocate a broody hen? When? And do some of you not move them at all?

Thanks for everyone's help yesterday but I think I'm going to buy this...after discounts it will be $288 and I am selling some things to get the extra cash needed. As long as I have it by the day I get Lucy chicks, she can continue to be a jerk to everyone in the nest boxes until then. Excited for something that will last and look nice!
