Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Wow!! So many new babies! They are all so cute. I am hoping to have an incubator next year. Otherwise, I should have a broody or 2 by that time for hatching babies. I am SO excited for home grown babies. Today, my mom and I are shooting a wedding. I took my girls' senior pics last year and have done some kid pics, but a wedding is a big deal and I am really nervous. I guess there's nothing like jumping in with both feet. Please send good thoughts and/or prayers my way today. I am afraid that I am going to be shaky from the nerves. I really want this to go smoothly.

I gave the chicklets some rice and quinoa mixed with their feed this morning. I have never seen them eat so much. They were chattering away the whole time they ate their breakfast, it was cute. My parrots don't care for it as much, so they just got their regular feed with some apple slices today.

On Friday, I got visited by the swamp thing. Here are some pics:

He had mud on every square inch of his body, with the exception of where his underwear was. Had it been a little warmer, I would have just dunked him in the creek. I think he was afraid he was going to be in trouble, so by the time he came up to where I could see him, it was caked and more than half dry. Good times.

What a cute smile - he does look a little concerned, doesn't he?

Firewifejess, I tried to multiquote but it didn't take. Yes, you are correct - I was trying to ask if a hen could lay an infertile egg if the cock (who is known to be loaded and ready) was breeding her. Hee, I'm smarter than a doctor!

One: I'm having trouble getting the Little Giant incubator tp stabilize at 99.1: I can have 98.5 but the next stop is 103.4, any suggestions? Help? Does the fact I'm running it dry and empty make a difference?

Also, I'm by way of being forced offline for a transitional period by something very wrong with the start-up sequence of my seven-year-old computer. We're going to back it up today (or rather DH is, I'm still getting new eggs and chickens where they belong) and I'll get an account going on my husband's machine, but I am displeased.

Both the "OLDER" LG's that use the wafer and the newer electronic are very touchy to adjust. On mine I put a large knob it is easier to make tiny adjustments. Yes it makes a difference if it is empty. Try adding a couple bottles full of water to act as heat sinks. That should help stabilize it then when you set eggs you can take the water out. Also IF you have the wafer style check the wafer to make sure it hasn't leaked and become ineffective. Hope this helps.

The larger knob sounds like a great idea, I'll have to see what I've got around to use- probably one of my gazzillion beads could be adapted for the purpose. Adding water bottles: warm or cold?

anyone know what type of chickens have black bones and a purplish color meat? I butchered my moms rooster. He was small, and pretty. Normal feathers so not a silky. But had 5 toes on each foot, and black bones. also was extremely aggressive.

Ouch.  Computer woes are a bummer.  Has your husband tried restoring it to a point where it worked well?  I  hope it's resolved easily for you.

I have found that the exterior temperature has a lot of impact on that type of incubator.  Is yours in a temp-stable place?  That helped me a lot.  Having it be full of eggs also helps keep the temp stable (more mass).

The place it is is as stable as a non-airconditioned place is, and I'm adding to the stability today by putting a shade/cat proofing structure over it, assuming I get shopping time.

Yesterday was torturous, I had trouble sleeping the night before and then turned off my alarm and went back to sleep for two hours, so I was dazed and fighting blood sugar issues (mostly bad lows) all day, plus trying to get the bantam house done plus equiptment problems out the nose- the batteries for my drills are dying, don't hold a charge for more than twenty minutes of use, and that makes everything worse when I'm in the middle of a build complicated by my brain running out of fuel at random!

I would first try a "restore point" back to when it wasn't giving you grief. (you prob have already tried it)

(edit) should have read the entire thread, sorry

Mikey, no, it's a good suggestion; thing is that we may need to start over from the word dot if it's a hardware faiure, so I have to back up the literal thousands of photo files and all my password protected accounts. DH is a high-level tech support person, so basic maintenance has been taken care of all along. It may be what he calls "cosmic rays, or cruel fate-" in other words nothing lasts forever.

It was a piece offerin. I tried to talk him into some more chickens.

Yes I went to the Or swap. I felt it was a VERY good turn out. The weather was great (yeah I got a little pink from being given a very nice spot outside (and I'm serious I probably had THE BEST location). I only brought home 2 chickens. Two VERY nice roosters if I do say so myself. One is a B Fav from CLoverleaf. He was shown and did well at Vancouver and then a nice BLRW cockerel. When Jeanine and a few others looked at him and said how awesome he is I figured I done good.

I also managed to find Oscar My'Yer a new home.

I didn't manage to find a new home for the hanging planter.

Or the new yard flower.

The leaves are on springs so they wave in the breeze!

I've had several different breeds of roosters when over 6 months have the darker meat you're referring to. Amauracana, Domnique... as for the bones, I found this, hopefully it helps clarify?

"Darkening around bones occurs primarily in young chickens. Since their bones have not calcified completely, pigment from the bone marrow can seep through the porous bones. Freezing can also contribute to this seepage. When the chicken is cooked, the pigment turns dark. It is perfectly safe to eat chicken meat that turns dark during cooking."

Morning all!!

I believe Sumatras have 5 toes, and black skin and bones.
