Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

So my broody EE that's on eggs let me know she's been gentle when she's tried to rip my hand apart. Anything else that comes near her gets much more viciously attacked. She managed to bruise me as well as draw blood when I checked her nest for extra eggs.

So the chicks from the two eggs that were under the broody that was killed, then I put the eggs under a silkie to hatch, turn 10 weeks old in a couple days. Both are female. That make me very happy. The one that is half ameraucana looks like a bit lighter patterning of her EE mother. The other one is a wheaten ameraucana. As a chick she had a very light ghosting of stripes on her back and I thought she might be an EE as well.

I moved them both in with the main flock a few days ago. No one has bothered them and the cockerel in there lets them snuggle under him at night.

Report: just moved nine more chicks (four SSH, five B'dA) into a second brooder: all of these were hatched after last night's move, and I have at least two more eggs pipped right now. Fast hands, damp washcloths.

Pictures later, I'm sitting down to cheese (Port Salut) and crackers (whole wheat round crunchy ones) with some cold-brewed tea, and then I need to go get hay for the sheep and put him in his pen for the night: he runs by the clock, and not the sun, and gets cranky if he's left out after 6:00pm.

Our first egg from the Hens we just got!!! ....I dropped it....while trying to take a picture of it.
But you haven't been here long enough to pick up my clumsiness! Here, have some cute chickies to cheer you up.

beats a full basket of eggs that I dropped a week ago! I yelled as I was angry at me for being so clumsy. A couple of minutes later I called Jake over (he loves raw eggs) so he could at least eat most of the mess. He came reluctently and then look at me as if to say, " I didn't do this, honest". He refused to eat those eggs even as I petted him and told him it was ok. He wasn't buying.

My dogs and cats all come running if I drop an egg. The cats knocked an egg basket with two dozen eggs off the counter so they could eat them. Made me so mad.

I've put eggs in my pants pockets and broke them before. Nothing like egg dripping down your leg.

I have a chick pic or two of my own! I came into these two unexpectedly on Thursday/Friday. One's a RIR and the other is an Iowa Blue. Their names are Strawberry and Blueberry.

They were having fun exploring mom's bed yesterday in between cuddles.
CUTE!!!!!
I have learnt a lesson ;-)

Chickens are smarter than you think!

I feed my chickens.... first, I refill the feeders then the waters. Then I pull out bread or treats from my pockets and feed them. I have four main hens areas. Today as I was refilling the feeders, after being gone for two days, the hens crowded around me....the Black Copper Marans....(I am the only one who gives them treats each night)

"Ah" I thought, "They miss me"

oh no, they had their darn grubby heads in my coat pockets. Three at a time and other where jumping on top of the other to stick their heads in my pockets to get the treats. Sheesh! First time they ever did this

OK, so I got out to go to my egg layers coop.. RIR, Orpintons, BCM, EE and so forth. Bent down and was immediately swarmed for treats......the Buff Orpington had her head in the coat pocket, then a RIR saw that and dove in. They just couldn't wait until I stood up after I refilled the feeders.

So I was thinking, they have figured out the treats in the pocket...so I thought? "where can I put the treats so they would grub in my pocket?"

"on my head"....then I realized that was a bad idea....;-)

I know, I will wear my coat that has zippers on the pockets.
Careful they may steal the shirt right off your back

Funny you should ask. They were so cool and I was so excited about them I even took a picture of them to send to friends and family. ;)

My (maybe not fixed after all) computer did something deeply weird and sucked all the electricity out of the battery while jamming the last year's photo library onto the chip and I need to go to bed sometime (downloading that many photos takes forever), especially since I got up early to check the hatchlings and then, after my husband came home at 9:20, finished taking the hoop house apart, loaded two BLRW hens into a size medium pet carrier (a bit like stuffing sausage) carried them a hundred or so feet uphill (ten feet changed in elevation) which: YOW those things are heavy. And then the real fun started, because they would not come out; I had to take the carrier apart and turn it upside down to get them out.

I'll take the tiny teeny splash or white Bd'A chick the size of fuzzy nothing, thanks, easier on my back.

So, anyway, no pictures to show you. And boy howdy am I babbling or what?
