Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

More then welcome! might have to invite you to the next work party so you can meet all those here in the area :) Plus you do really good work! :D

You bet. I'm more than willing to join in and help out. Just let me know when. ;)

Ok I will call you for the next gathering! :)

Thanks for the help. Now to figure out what to do, can't have roosters in the city and one of my kids is going to be without a chicken.

Where are you located? I have babies all the time. pure Ameraucana's but they are projects so not for showing... does your kids want to show? I also have Serama's but have not started hatching any of those yet.

I've been getting a kick out of watching our littles now that they're in with the hens. I was fascinated one evening when I lingered in the pen after the hens had already retired to the coop and the littles were still playing outside. Once they got bored pestering me for treats they noticed it was about time to go to roost. So #1 starts walking all around the ladder to the coop looking up as if to say "I know it's here somewhere, but I just can't find it!" She kept it up for the longest time.... pacing and searching, pacing and searching. She finally hopped up onto the ladder, walked part way up, looked around and decided that just wasn't the right place. So she hopped down and renewed her search for the pop door. Round and round, looking every where. She finally hopped onto the ladder again and made it to the top, stopping just inches shy. Looked all over and AGAIN decided it wasn't the right place. By then #2 had followed her up and was hot on her heels, so they had to do quite the dance to do a thorough search only to decide it wasn't the right place!!!! It took several trips up and down and all around before they finally got all the way inside the coop. And one of the hens kept reaching down from her strategic location above to give them a good peck, letting them know SHE was having None of this follie! I was *fascinated* and totally laughing out loud. The next evening I drug DH out to watch and yep, they did the whole thing again! He laughed even more than I had. These little critters are SO much fun! LOVE THEM! And my DD just doesn't get why I like chickens so much.

I have 5 feathered out chicks from Coastal that were also marked as Araucana and they are probably the same age as yours. I am going to have too many Easter Egger chickens since I also got 6 labeled Ameracauna (one rooster and five pullets). The ones I bought as Ameracauna look more like the ones I have raised as Araucana in the past but my hope is that they are all Easter Egger chickens so I get blue, green, and pink eggs. At some point I will be selling extra pullets if you want to buy just one to replace your rooster. I might even be interested in your rooster since my rooster was from the same batch with the pullets (one of the 10% that was able to hide his boy part during vent sexing) and may be too related if I want to hatch eggs in the future. Your rooster looks a lot like mine except that mine is black and white without the red (all my hens have red in them but he does not).

I have been selling my ducklings so soon after hatching that I thought I could do the same with chicks. Now I know that I need to wait for them to get solid on their feet for a full day first because one of the five I sold this morning made the trip to its new home and then died! I am going to refund the $8 for the chick but sadly a child is now experiencing the grief of losing a new pet.

I have decided I like hatching my own ducks more than chickens from eggs I purchased for hatching. They have been such hardy ducklings. I have some under a hen that are close to hatching and then I am trading them for some unrelated ducklings. I have five ducklings in the house that I will put out when the weather warms up and I am wondering if I can get the hen duck to adopt the ducklings I am trading hers for when I take hers away so I don't have to keep ducklings in the house for so long.

I have chickens hatching and I am hoping to be able to sell them as babies so I don't have to raise the chicks but in the future I will give them more time after hatching so they have a better start. I wish I had more duck eggs to hatch but I have not been able to find any. I was going to get a dozen Khaki Campbell eggs but then the person's drake died so she just gave me the few eggs she had been collecting for me. Does anyone know where I can find inexpensive local duck eggs to hatch?

Greetings fellow washintonians!!

My wife and I were considering purchasing an incubator so as to avoid the (what we feel is) inflated cost of buying chicks. We were wondering if anyone sells fertile(or atleast likely to be) eggs? We read the trader joes add and that it was a smashing idea. Alas, Trader joes in our area does not sell fertile eggs(darn!) We live in teh Graham/Tacoma area. No real specific breed, however if you have polish my wife will love you and me that much more. Cheers!

Got something done today at least. As I am getting much closer to being ready for some chickens to come stay with me I thought it would be a good idea to have something to transport them in. This is what I came up with. I'll install the door tomorrow.

That's Cool! I cant wait to see your Coop if your Carrier is this cool! Obviously your good with da wood!! Mike suggested maybe a scrap piecs of fooring to make clean up easier that's a good idea and would make it easier. You could toss in some news paper if you didn't want to use the flooring. If you use shaving don't use cedar it's very bad for the chicks.
Rain wolf , honeysuckle hills and I have been busy building gates and fences--it's so nice to have help!

I'll very soon have a poop free patio and yard.
You have been busy those look really nice!!!!

Thanks. The carrier worked really well, brought home 4 cool birds tonight. Yea!

Fits in my truck just fine!

Plenty of room for the girls. The apple carton dividers worked great for a liner for the bottom too. Very pleased!
