Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Depends on the breed and age I think

IMO, if you want pet chickens that are lap chickens, you either need to get friendly chickens (that someone else has spent a lot of time with) or hatch your own and spend a lot of time with them.

There are also more docile breeds, Salmon Faverolle comes to mind. My most friendly chickens are the Brabanters I hatched from Hallerlake's eggs.

What are you looking for? And where are you located? There are a lot of folks on here that have friendly chickens of all ages, sizes, and breeds :D

I don't want lap chicken friendly just nice easy to manage pets, I like wyandottes mostly blr or golden, I am in montesano.

I bought my first 3 around 4months old and they had never been held~once they started to lay the became cuddly.  The trick to turn them into pets is to give them treats! :)

Thanks that makes me feel more confident. I have had back luck with straight run chicks being mostly cockerels, so I was looking at older chicks

I just did the thing I try to avoid at all costs and usually end up doing twice a month, at least: moved the broody pen and the sheep pen on the same day.

Great fun. Not.

Me thinks you need to set things up better, for YOU.

I really need to move Malvina into the hoop house for now- if for no other reason than the younger Hamburgs are laying in the setting nest! I have this detailed flow chart for getting things moved around and put to rights, but getting the list off paper and into three dimensions is not happening. I also have a plan to put the sheep in a big patch of blackberries and plum root suckers down by the barn so I don't have to tether him out every day, but he needs a haircut first and THAT means heading up to Yellum, where I hear there's a store that sells clipper parts. And it is also true that it will offend his sense of belonging, so I will have to visit frequently.

I'm going to hang the feeders high tonight and put my last rat baits out, although I think my egg-eater is a squirrel: I found egg shells under the place where my sworn enemy squirrel (the one that chewed through the siding) eats my philberts and my cousin's walnuts.

Luckily my daughter was agreeable to stopping by tonight and filling the babie's feed and water containers, because I was out of reflexes and they are being, well, two week old chicks with no bugs to catch are like bored gradeschool students.

I LOVE those colours and little crests. So, LF, but some LF are on the small size; how big do these ones get?

The White Crested that we were able to hold at Monroe were on smaller side I guess. But all our birds so are dual purpose breeds so they are on the larger side. I know that there (White eggs) are normal size. If ya want to start putting feathers back out in the chicken run you could start with these I'll have a few to spare. The Roo's look like Rock stars and the hens bouffant hairdo's will be all the rage!

Quote: I've had a different experience with my BLRWs than robj. I got them when they were about 3 months old. They hadn't been handled much in their previous home. I tried very hard to make friends with them, but it never happened. They're going to a new home soon because they're a bit aggressive toward my other girls, who are more docile.

I have to agree with Dawn; if you want cuddly chicken-pets, get them as chicks and handle them a lot. When I go into the pen, I'm accosted by my Australorp (named Pudge, she's my avatar). The others peck at my calves and raid my pant cuffs. I spent tons of time with them for the first month. I'm spending lots of time with my current pair of chicks, a Rhode Island Red and an Iowa Blue. I think it's fairly amusing that the breed names of my current chicks follow the pattern "state color." I have to say, the Iowa Blue is a nut. She's super-alert and will run for cover at the drop of a hat (trait of the breed). She squeals bloody murder when you're trying to catch her, but then she'll peep happily and sit sweetly in your hands when you catch her. I'm wondering if there's a chance that my RIR might be a roo. If it is, I will keep it (I'm actually kind of hoping that it is). It has a special place in my heart.
