Hi Deidra,Some varieties do better than others. The Raintree site says which ones are better here. It's the lack of summer heat rather than day length that's the problem.

I planted Izu and Saijo this year and Siajo actually leaved out quite early.
Out of a first year twig from raintree, I actually got 2 fruits.
Izu on the other hand never got a chance. I dragged a hose too close to it and snap

So from what was left of the root stock, I grafted a Jiro onto it. Will see.
Here is my theory for the early leaf out.
I planted Saijo in the compost pile. Nice & hot.
I planted Izu in regular dirt. Too cold.
So next year, I plan to compost next to it again. I'm thinking its root heat that it needs.

But to have a good experiment going, I need more plants.

So I ordered a few coffee cakes, izus and saijo cuttings from UC Davis and will order some root stock from Raintree.
Now I wait till spring ...
