Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I was going to buy a GQF cabinet, then opted not to, then changed my mind again- I decided that I've had enough of this crappy hatching.

In fact, I was going to put the order in this week- was just checking prices to find the best deal (anyone?) - then spaced it out amongst the chaos. These last 3 weeks have been super challenging. Ya know....one of those weeks where I wish I could tolerate a lot more alcohol !

(I settled for homemade coconut milk ice cream WITH SPRINKLES last night)
Costco, right in the entrance, has a big stack of Tequila WINE, 27% alcohol, and mixed with lime, and I got a bottle, and it is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooogood, makes ya drool...so get a glass and dip the rim in salt (or sugar) and fill with ice, and have a glass of this !
One or 2 is all I can do & all is good after that !
I will PM you @ these incubators and who maybe has a few at a lesser cost.

I wish it had stayed nice and sunny. We have to clean out the run of some of the plants. We found Scotch Broom out there and from what I can gather it is poisonous to them! It also looks like we have some mint growing and some that suspiciously look like weed, you know the puff, puff pass type

All the chicks are doing well in the big girl/boy coop. Yesterday we went out to check on them and saw them chest bumping each other. We know that we have at least one roo and I think we have another one but need it to grow some more feathers to be sure. We have had them for four weeks now. They ranged in age from day old to 2 weeks old when we got them. The oldest chick is a pullet. So far we have not heard any cock-a-doodle-do though.

We cut up some left over watermelon and gave it to them. They stripped that thing down to the rind in a matter of minutes!
Old Men saying:

Get a sock, and ball it up, and hurl it over the top of the group of chick's heads.
1) the hen chicks will duck
2) the cock chicks will stand straight up & look to where the invader is !

Even at this young age, the man chickens are men, and the girl chickens are girls...

I'm glad so many of you have incubators and love to hatch eggs! When I was in my 20s I had parrots and "experimented" with hatching eggs. The first set of eggs did not hatch. I think I candled them too much. After that I decided to let the parents lay on them. The next set of eggs hatched but the parents killed the babies. That was the end of my desire to breed birds. Better to stick with what I'm good at than dooming babies from the start.

I do love the chicks though. Next time I get chicks I'll buy them from one of you instead of the feed store. Now I just need to figure out what kind of chicks I want to get in the future. So many breeds and so little time...

My eight chicks will be 6 weeks old on Monday. They are growing so fast and doing great! Here they are in the pool, which we had to put a net over to keep them from flying out. During the day they get to fly around in a stall that is set up for them. They've been hunting bugs and eating greens that I picked for them out of the yard.

I have some Scotch Broom, and none of my birds are even interested in it, it as if they know.
The only weed here I worry after, is water hemlock, and it is found down below in the tidelands.
The birds do not go after any native species here, not ferns, bleeding heart, shamrocks, piggyback fern, trillia, none.

Do not sit in a chair with a sandwich in your hand....then answer your phone and let your arm/hand with sandwich hang over the side....why you ask? Because the Cream Legbars will stroll up from behind and peck the sandwich and you jump and let go of the sandwich and then they descend upon the sandwich like wolverines! They knocked over my rootbeer and some drank that as well....

silly birds!

I know my kids will love to try this.
Crazy enough, we hatched out some Maran x Australorps and one was crowing... a teeny, tiny crow...at just 8 days old!

I thought my kids were just pulling my leg until my son caught him on video. He is now 2 months old and crows with the big boys every morning.
His tail came in more than a week before the others so I watched the second hatch and sure enough there is another with a tail while the others have none. I am guessing we have a second cockerel. He has crowed only once and is 11 days old.

That's hilarious. They are good hunters! Caught themselves a whole lunch

They are like piranha when they get their little beaks on something tasty.
