I'm also from California - Lived in LA for 10 years, and SF for 4. I've only been in WA for 3 years. I've heard from some people that it takes about 3 winters to get used to the rain....but I knew it would take me longer. This winter was the hardest so far. My husband took me to Florida to get some much needed sun. Hopefully I'll get used to it before 20 years!

I have lived here my whole life and I still hate the rain and get sick of snow after 1 or less days.

I don't need to kill all the crows but I would like to kill the ones bold enough to come into my yard and decapitate baby bunnies! I get frustrated with the loss of duck eggs but I can tolerate some losses if the crows keep the big predators away. I have seen them go after hawks and even an eagle. When they become the predators, they are the threat and I want to eliminate them.

I have two hen ducks raising 15 ducklings right now and I am worried that a crow will get them. There is lots of tree cover in my yard but then my rabbit pens are under plum trees so the crows are not deterred by the tree cover. The mother ducks will charge at the large fowl chickens that get too close to their babies so I am sure they would run off the crows too. They keep the ducklings rounded up in a pile and the ducklings move pretty fast so hopefully they will be safe.

Having crows in the area is good as long as they are not threatening my flock. They can have the Flock Raiser and perhaps a few eggs now and then but no babies! I am considering putting a net up over my Silkie pen now since the plum trees do not offer as much protection as I had thought they would.

I feel the same about the snow. We really only get 1 or 2 days of snow here, and I've been okay with it, I just really hate being cold. and not seeing the sun for SOOO long. My husband regularly doses me with Vit D. Haha.

jbkirk, I've been through Sumas many times, when crossing into Abbotsford to see friends. Your weather is very similar to ours. Although you had a lot more snow than we did this winter.

I think in the last couple of years I finally figured it out.
My vitamin D was almost 0. It needs to be 50 min, 70 preferred.
I started taking 15,000IU a day and found that the weather, especially during the dark months, did not depress me like it had.
Maybe I should keep it a secret and see if my DH will take me to Florida as well! LOL

I'm kind of odd I guess because I LOVE the snow. Not to drive in it but just the way it quiets things where I live and makes every thing so clean and mud free!
Until it melts, of course, then it is twice as bad. lol

Just this morning there was a raven circling over my yard as the babies were out eating. The crows were bombing the raven and distracted it just enough to give the babies time to run into their stall. I don't think a raven is big enough to carry off a 2 pound pullet, but I don't want to find out either.

I don't like crows, but they were here before I was so I'll let them be.

My ducks were given a duck house, but they didn't like it. In the winter, they have access to the coop, but prefer to sit in the yard and get covered in snow. It's funny to watch them get up and shake the snow off the next morning.

GETTING RID OF CROWS

This isn't easy, we had them, eating our eggs or hauling them off. I've heard that partially blowing eggs and filling them with mustard (or other nasty stuff) will put them off. Good Luck.
Seriously !!!! I am cold thinking of this ! My Cat who now hates her Dog House ( Igloo ) that the Dogs hate too.. will go to the ducks.. I figure they are young and not laying. So.. why not. Then when they start to lay I can re-think the whole thing LOL. I also have 2 MED size coops and 1 small one. I think maybe i can put them in with some chickens down the road . The coops are tall so under them is a safe dry space IF needed. The ducks think so different than chickens... its confusing me LOL
