Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

My poor 3 week old EE seems to be getting all her new feathers at once and is just grumpy and itchy and miserable. So itchy in fact she's letting me give her rubs, which is cute but I feel for her. It must feel like teething all over your body

You're a good chickie momma! I just love holding chicks. Maybe she'll stay cuddly forever.... nice!

DD is selling hers. It was hit twice while parked and needs work. She had it repaired after the first time but doesn't have the time or interest to deal with it again. Know anyone that might be interested?

Hi all, we've got a hen who has been broody for a couple of weeks now and we are thinking of sneaking a chick or two under her one night this weekend. (She is super nurturing and is in her own private 'chalet' under our main coop.) Any one have any experience doing this? My very limited online research seems to suggest that this can work.

If the consensus here is in fact in line with my quick google search ... is anyone incubating any eggs they expect to be hatching this weekend? Or know of where we might be able to get 1 or 2 chicks within an hour or so of Seattle ... preferably sexed?

Thanks for any / all advice!

It's very possible to put a couple of chicks under a broody. Just be sure to do it VERY late at night when it is totally dark outside. I'd suggest at least two though.
If you can get some of Diamond Dust's Barnevelder chicks that would be great! Good luck and have fun!

Two weeks old

And three weeks old

Hinotori..... CUTE pantaloons!!!

Hi all,
I wish I could be on here more but time just seems to run away from me! My daughters (blended family they are five months apart in age) graduated from high school a year early and we just got their acceptance to college letters in the mail today

I really need to update my blog with recent pictures of the chicks. They have all grown so much. I think the ones that surprised us the most are the following two. We did not think they would turn out these colors. Still not sure what kind they are but I think they are Old English Game Birds?

This one we had to syringe feed pedialyte every two hours the first 24 hours.

The second one

They're both Old English Game Bantams. Both are Cockerels. Top one is Spangled, bottom is Silver Duckwing.

They're both totally gorgeous! I love the shot of their wingspan. I thinks all the variation in feather coloring is just fascinating! Thanks for sharing!

I other news my 3 week RIR chick Ruby figured out how to flap up to the top ledge of the brooder. I was holding her sister and giving her scratches to alleviate her molting itches and poof! There was Ruby on the ledge trying to hop onto my shoulder. I'm glad it happened while I was home, I cannot IMAGINE the havoc a chick could get into wandering our house unattended. Something tells me I'll be macguyvering some sort of lid system that will allow the heat lamp to still shine through. Guidance for a quick fix would be helpful until I can get some hardware fabric or something. I've got them in a plastic Tupperware tote right now, about 2.5 feet tall. Maybe she won't be motivated to jump up so long as she's not in the brooder alone?

Ha ha, yeah right! Chickens are born trouble makers, it seems!

Imagine no more - I can tell you what kind of havoc you'd find. The chicks would have a blast, but you'd find chicken poo all over the floor, couch, windowsill, everywhere. You'd be cleaning stains out of the carpet all summer!!!

We bought a piece of bird netting at the local hardware store. it was only about $8 for 6 x 12 foot piece. We covered our brooder with the net and tucked the edges under the bottom of the brooder. We attached the heat lamp to a chair next to the brooder and the chicks still had their heat source. The net kept them in the brooder until they were 9 weeks old. at which time I finally had to cut the purse strings and reluctantly make them sleep outside at night.

I happen to have chicks hatching tonight...if she wants to give them to her broody it's best if they are only a couple of days old. I'd be happy to enable...er, I mean help out!

Reminds me of when my Black Lab had 6 puppies and about 5 weeks old, they managed to unlock the big playpen crate they were in while I was at work.

You would not believe how they trashed the entire house !
EVERY room was poop & pee and torn magazines, papers, chewed every cable, telephone cord and holes in couch & chairs, ripped bedspreads off & dragged through the poopy floor !
Garbage cans, toilet paper........toys and shoes all chewed & poopy................

I got home and had to scrub until midnight !

And that woudl be why we don't have a dog anymore. One day when I was out feeding the horses he decided to destroy the couch. When I came in 10 minutes later there was white fluff everywhere - it looked like it had snowed in the house. We found him a great him where he is much less bored and has another dog to play with. No more dogs for us.
