Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

She's very nice. Didn't even say anything bad about the silly chicken purse I crocheted her for the facebook group's gift exchange last fall.

I've had issues off and on with the northern fowl mite. Eprinex helped some but it was getting ridiculous. I started using the Frontline and that has done much better on keeping them away.
I wanna see the silly chicken purse !

Another theory about those different mites:

I spoke to many old poultry breeders during that episode of mites, and none had ever heard of/seen that kind of outrageous infestation.
Several theorized as where/how we got the bugs, and it was a long time after a show so we ruled that out.
The other theory that sounded like it could be, besides migrating songbirds dragging the bugs from South America, was the shavings.

I noticed that those mites loved congregating into the wood CEDAR or PINE shavings.
This poultryman said maybe the bugs were in the shavings in the first place where they were packaged, and I was merely spreading the bugs throughout my coops.

I suspected he was correct, as the shavings we get from Del's is packaged in LONG BEACH CALIFORNIA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course birds could visit the shavings factories, drop bugs, bugs get packed up & distributed throughout the US of A !

Note: Cedar made no difference to the bugs, either.
Dig deep in the shavings (2-3" on plywood floors kept very clean !) and you could see the little devils in the shavings !
Even in freshly laid cedar shavings.
I never saw any IN the shavings still packaged...but always wondered...................................IF anyone gets these nasty critters, ask yourself these questions : Did you use LongBeach California Shavings from Del's ?
We need to keep track so we know:
Time of year outbreaks occur, places they break out & types of feed & bedding/straw used.
It may be we are simply importing these nasty bugs ourselves !

OMG how would you tell a silkie purse was a chicken? It's hard enough to tell on the actual bird sometimes. LMAO!

I saved the pattern. I've thought about making another one. I didn't like how it turned out just by the pattern. It needed more tail and bigger wings. So I added the black in. That did just about perfect.

I think this is another good reason I'm glad I use sand.
