Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

WOW that sounds like one Ninja Silkie. I guess he is just avenging all the beatings silkies take at the beaks & spurs of other breeds.

He's hilarious. It started with him and the 2 year old Ameraucana rooster getting into a spat several weeks ago. The Am rooster backed down. He doesn't really like fighting anymore and will only do enough to keep dominance over the teenagers. That gave the silkie rooster a big ego. He'd been going after the teenagers whenever they grabbed any hen and she yelled, so they already had a respect for him.

Normally he only kept everyone away form the 10 ft radius of the silkie pen. Today he decided that just wasn't enough space anymore.

Just thought I'd update about our little flock of 20 that we started in March with day old chicks and a couple that were maybe a week.

Out of the 20 chicks we got 15 are roosters!

We got one egg a couple of days ago. The shell was perfect it was just tiny. No eggs since. We started them on egg layer feed and put out oyster shells.

I think that the hens are being harassed so we have started to butcher the roosters. The rooster that are the most aggressive with the hens (or us) are the ones that go first. The first to be done was the production red, he was the meanest and attacked every single time we were in the run. All of the BR roosters are going to be food. The two banty roo's will go to the ferret. We are keeping the black roo (mutt so not sure what he is but he is very sweet).

The four turkeys that we got are all growing great and all four of them are boys! They are starting to strut their stuff, gooble and are a hoot! Every time they see me they run over and look for food and puff up.

Rainier 15 roos out of 20 chicks, boy, who did you tick off??

I know, right. Next time we are going with sex linked so we know we have hens! The production red's we got (4 of them) two turned out to be roo's but they were sold to us as pullets.

The roo's the we plan to butcher are already sold so at least we made a bit of money off of them!

Howdy!! We just moved to the northern Seattle area last month to join my husband that started his new job a month before our move. We are still getting settled in. My hens and baby girls made the 4 day journey across the country (from eastern TN) along with me, my mom, my two kids, 4 dogs, and 2 rabbits. Whew, I'll be happy if I never see another UHaul as long as I live! The wind we encountered in South Dakota about did us in (tough on the trailer, ate through 3 tarps and a machine cloth cover on the baby brooder) but the girls were troopers (and they said the treats they got at every stop didn't hurt :p). We love Seattle so far and found a great coop builder that's delivering a new coop for us on Thursday. I'm so excited! We built the coops at our last two houses but this move I hurt my back and just couldn't find the oomph needed to build another. Right now the chickens have elected our littlest dog, Tink (old breeding dog that was adopted out to us a few years ago), as the chicken leader. It's hilarious how they all just follow her around the yard. The kids have also discovered "Chicken Football" at our new house. They throw out a bread/fruit and watch the frenzy and chase that entails. We're all so happy to have a large, flat yard to play in.

Released in their new yard (with some scratch!) and they are sooooo happy!

The kiddos on the trip (we were pretty squished together).

The baby brooder, machine cloth was ripped away in the wind.

Not much tarp left (this was tarp number 2 of 4)

So tired from all the moving

The chickens were caught exploring the trampoline, the kids thought they wanted to jump, the chickens quickly learned they did not want to be on the trampoline

New bunny home - temporarily closed until we can get the perimeter of the kennel secured, Izzy is an escape artist. Hamilton just likes digging out a warren and hiding down there

They're not used to such a small space!

The baby chickens have grown so much in the last month, they're borrowing the bunny kennel as their "grow out" space.

Cranberry is turning 11 in November, she says she deserves her beauty rest.

Wicket is Cranberry's brother, he's our first baby.
