Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hi, i think i would agree with the personality trait potential having both Amer. & Faverolles….They should also have 5 toes and like mentioned blue to green eggs, possibly larger and a bit more……Think EE have a better laying history than True Amer. so would depend on its parents.. Have seen a few from eggs that i received from a friend….She also had Marans in the mix which really made a few pretty birds…..I just raise normals.

The Spangled Russian OrloffX Ameracauna made some awesome babies !
Spangled Ameracaunas !

One part of Ameracaunas I dislike is their lack of coloration, with most as 1 solid colored (cept for the Wheaten, Blue wheaten)
Add a Russian Orloff in there & you would be surprised by the colors !

It did occur to me that I may have two roosters and one hen. That was my first guess, actually... I just don't think they are roos, though, truly. There are zero signs aside from the combs and wattles. At nearly 19 weeks I'd have thought there would at least be some crowing attempts or saddle feathers. I thought one had some long tail feathers but they all grew out the same and look like a hen's. Am I correct to think that or are there "sleeper" roosters? If so, I give up til I see an egg come out of each of them, lol.
Hold the bird as a baby, and dig into it's feathers at the base of the tail along it's back, If it is a cockerel, it will have (by far at this age) emerging hackle...LONG straight thin feathers.
If it is a pullet, there will be no hackle.
The cockerels also have hackle in their cape, all around their neck.
Emerging hackle in a 1-2 month old cockerel would look like skinny pointy feathers coming out, almost spike-like.
Some cockerels and Cocks shown below:

Was wondering if anyone knew where I could find a Bantam Cochin in western WA. Looking for a bird that is annoyingly broody as my daughter and myself would love to try hatching some eggs this way.
Not picky about coloring/etc.. Just want a reliable mama :)

We currently have a flock of 5 hens at POL and a nice tame roo that free range from sun up to sun down on 2 acres and then are locked in tight at night in the coop.
Try a silky instead !

So I thought I'd share some "cuteness" -- we recently had a Broody Hen "Diaper Deana" hatch a couple babies - she's the only hen with our ever so cute, over protective, I love you to death rooster Jr.

After all the babies hatched and started to come out - I caught him inside the house are and I was a little worried, since our other rooster could of possibly killed our other babies - I was shocked at what I saw -

I also found he freezes when a chick comes close - one even started pulling his waddle and pecks his eye and he did nothing just stayed frozen... then went back to trying to feed them.

cutest thing ever, he's so proud of his babies
That is so adorable !
And Jr is gorgeous, but why call Deana "diaper" ?

I got to thinking today that I will eventually have enough to make a privacy fence if I cut the bags open but that might be too redneck looking for my neighbors! Maybe if I turn them inside out I can string them together and use them like roof panels to cover my Silkie pen. They might even make a great wall if I fill them and stack them like sandbags.

Does anyone else here have a fodder system? I have a homemade one using a cheap 4-tier greenhouse from Walmart and some plastic trays from the dollar store that I burned holes into. I keep it on my back patio, and it works beautifully...except, there's a swarm of flies in the thing day and night. I have lids on the plastic trays now, but the flies still swarm inside the greenhouse. And if there's any standing water on top of the tray lids, they drown. Every morning I spray off dozens of dead flies and still there are dozens more. I'm going to put a fly catcher on the inside soon.

I do fodder on a small scale. Maybe there's a buildup of something the flies can use as a food source such as mold or decay? or maybe they find it to be a good place to lay eggs? Are you using a weak bleach solution some days? What grain are you using? Do you have really good air circulation? If not you might want to add a fan.
