Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Fantastic! What a perfect day for all of you! I wish I'd been a fly on the wall to watch. I really love seeing little kids get excited about things.

Our neighbor came by to help. She was just as bad as the kids with asking questions!

We got SOOOOO lucky with the weather! It rained before they got there and it POURED after! We bought ponchos and duct tape trying to prepare just in case but god blessed us today and gave us an EXACT window of dryness while they were here!

DH was dreading having 15 toddlers at the house but he loved how their little minds were working and the questions they asked. One little boy figured out how many years old he would be before the field of "baby" trees (3 year old nobles) would be big enough to buy and said he was going to save his money and get a certain tree because it was his favorite.

Kids crack me up!

Maybe when they come back in the spring you can be there talking chickens the same day!

Today the kids came out to our house to see the farm! We own a Christmas tree farm, have a garden, fruit trees, tractors, a horse, 2 dogs, cats, 13 chickens, 5 guinea fowl, and 3 turkeys.

We showed them our wreath making machine and how to make a wreath, explained the trees, went to explain the tractors but they wanted to see the trees so we moved on pretty quick. We got to the trees showed them the different sizes and then FINALLY, the animals!

They were very excited but I told them my birds don't like loud. So we used inside voices. They loved the turkeys and were surprised that the girls didn't say gobble gobble. They liked that my chickens were different colors but were concerned with all the feathers on the ground (molting here a LOT). I showed them one chicken who is still pretty but is starting to molt. She is a SLW and appearently when I picked her up she lost a tail feather. One little boy tried to give it to me so I could "put it back so she doesn't get cold" Very thoughtful! I showed them the nest boxes and one hen was laying her egg. After they saw her egg we went and picked squash and some tomatoes to take back with them.

Then EVERYONE had to go potty! Thank god I have 3 bathrooms! They all got on the bus and I followed them with their wreath and veggies to the school. They were very cute and sang me a song that they adjusted on the bus. Cassie and Ken have a farm EIEIO and on their farm they have a _______...... LOL They inserted everything they noticed that we own!

It was a blast and they are coming back in the spring when the eggs they hatch are grown and we are planting new trees and seeds.

Sounds like an amazing day with kids : ) Thanks for sharing with them. I am sure there parents thank you. Its a good education as well for them.

Oooh... Free coop in Everett. My bestie is gonna pick it up for me. It's for chickens, but I think after a little touch up, it'll work for ducks...

I'm half way between Arlington and Marysville on the east side of highway 9…….
I guess my comment was a bit odd…..sorry, someone here was just curious where many of us live and i should have quoted them….

Birdnovice,Carolynn does have some good thoughts, but having a rooster doesn't mean having to endure hatching chicks... fertile eggs won't hatch if they are collected or without needed consistent warmth for 21 days…. Not all hens will go broody even with a full nest of eggs...….Thou they can make the girls back a bit untidy sometimes, and crow, they are the watchers, protectors, bring to the girls attention when food is found….Apologize in advance, i love roosters.

Good points. If you're not pressured by neighbors or local laws, you might want to think about keeping your cockerel. They DO have good reasons to be in a flock.

I think you only need a license when you sell in certain quantities and/or pull in a taxable amount of profit. In fact, I know that the amount of eggs you can sell is pretty high. He probably hasn't even researched the specifics but it's an easy google search.

This is what I've heard as well. I'd look up locate laws.
