Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Note to self: If this batch of ducks doesn't hatch, buy Brinsea before trying again.

This LG is finicky. It's driving me crazy. It drops low at night... and jumped to 104 on Sunday morning. I THINK I've got it stable. But this is craziness. And I can't candle until Friday.

Anyone have experience candling blue eggs? Are they harder to see through?

My blue chicken eggs were not at all hard to candle. Not sure if duck eggs are more difficult to see or not. My Marans eggs were a whole different story. The air cell could barely be seen so I just assumed they were ok, and they were! :) All of the them hatched.

Hi all! I've introduced myself in this thread about 10 months ago and occasionally lurk.. But now that we have some chickens under our belt that are now laying we've gotten chicken fever and would like more. We ended up with 4 Faverolles and 1 Speckled Sussex. All from a hatchery, and doing just fine. However, for the next round of birds we would like to hatch our own from fertile eggs. One of our Faverolles is always trying to go broody on us, so we thought - Why not let her do what she does best?

We love our girls, but I am generally unsatisfied with the quality we ended up with. They're very small and their coloring is off. No fear, I still tell them that they are gorgeous and that we love them very much (we don't need chickens with self-esteem issues, do we?)

Anyway, we are hoping to find some local folks with fertile eggs from quality genetics. I'm not looking to exhibition birds, but would like our girls to be at least 'a decent representation of the breed'...

If anyone knows folks who would be willing to be on speed-dial for selling fertile eggs the next time P.J. (our forever broody) hunkers down in the nest, I would love to get some contact information.

Breeds we're looking for:

Black Copper Marans
Welsummer
Legbar
Isbar
Ameraucana
White Leghorn
Black Australorp
Barred Rock

Obviously we won't be able to get all the breeds eggs at the same time under one broody, so I'm happy to go for whatever pops up and checking them off the list as a long term project as we go.

Our cranky flock after bath time a couple of months ago -

Welcome back! Nice you've come out of lurking mode. :)
You're in the West Sound so you may have to travel a little bit to get what you want, but we do have some resources over here, too.
Pam at Raincreek Pottery would be a good person to contact, she has several breeds and sells fertile eggs.
Lyn at Stoney Earth Farm has wonderful Ameraucanas and Marans (her Wheaten Marans are gorgeous). Look at the About page on her FB account for contact info.
Good Welsummers can be had from Erhard at Kummer Poultry near Black Diamond. Google him to get contact info.
And contact @Flaming Chicken for good Cream Legbars.

These are all good local peeps with good birds. I'd suggest contacting them well in advance, just to get acquainted and to be sure you have current contact info. Real life can sometimes get in the way and slow down responses.

Remember, too, that there's a poultry show in Monroe in March. Eggs are always available there, too. And it's a fun to go.

Enjoy!

I'm. Very excited, About a mount ago DW n me put some of our magpie duck eggs under our broody bantam hens. We just went out to see if any thing was going on. We listen to the eggs n head the little peeps inside n some movement. I can't wait to see our first home grown ducks sometime tomorrow.

I know there's a lot of Orpington lovers here! Any one of you interested in a blue Orpington cockerel? He's just under a year old. We love him he just can't be used in my breeding program because his color is not proper blue-he has too much yellow/copper in his saddle and hackle feathers. He gets along great with my hens and another rooster (they were raised together).PM me if you're interested.

I am NPIP certified and AI-negative.

how are the sagitta's personality like? lol it accidentally went above freezing?

They lay big eggs... 3 of the 4 are laying... don't know why #4 ain't puttin' out eggs... 3 eggs daily 56-72 grams... I treat them like business partners... no huggin'... but they see me coming toward the run and they greet me... they follow me as I walk around the run... They beg for scratch... they talk to me... (probably, where's the scratch)... I've almost got them trained to leave the coop when I say out , out, out... The really chatter when an egg has been laid... the egg song I guess it's called.. I can get to within 3-4 feet of them when in the run... then I have violated their space... I haven't tried to get really friendly... The roo is great now that he has been released from 3 weeks in jail... The matron hen keeps him in check... Fairly quiet since his "escape".... Only jumps the hens when they are ready instead of the 12 times a day sexcapade before his lock up... I have a lavender orpington and blue laced Wyandotte hens also..... they are really docile and friendly... I think I prefer the sagitta's... they are twice as big as the orp. and wyan... a really pretty bird...

I haven't been on BYC for a while.

I have a small flock of Cream Legbar that I have been breeding for correct color. I made a lot of progress last year and hope to have hatching eggs available starting early spring.

Please PM me when you are ready. I will hopefully be able to help you out.
