Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

@Hinotori and

@Silseb

Thanks so much for letting me know you've had success with vaccinating for Marek's. It gives me some hope for the future.

I have two more sick pullets now. I'm almost afraid to go out to the coop this morning to see how they are.
I either buy vaccinated birds, or vaccinate my own, and always have since moving here, and we have never had a case of Marek's.
I am popping a bottle of vaccine open this Saturday, and anyone can come vaccinate...has to be done in 1 hrs time, once the vaccine is mixed.
What I do is vaccinate my chicks & birds, then move out to anyone else's cars and do their birds/chicks.
I am far from most of you...but trying to help here.
The vaccine comes in a 1000 dose bottle (only) and cost is not bad, but shipping is expensive as the bottles must be kept chilled & overnight delivery.
So you can see how I'd have ALOT of extra doses !
I will be sure the vaccination is going on Saturday, by tomorrow for sure.
There was a talk going on about splitting a bottle of vaccine, and thereby saving at least 500 doese for another time.
Once it is mixed, you have 45 minutes-1 hr if kept cold, to use it as fast as you can.
So saving half for another hatch would be awesome.
I have not heard anymore talk of this though, if it were true, Pips&peeps would know.

Heat Packs, Desicants... I have more to learn!

I'm a happy calatoger and forager as part of the Kitsap Mycological Society. Although with young kids I don't get as much time out in the woods as I used to.
However, my daughter (7) can identify Chanterelles reliably, and most of the edible berries in this part of the state.. Just need to get the younger one (3) out there more...

We have the weirdest shrooms here, besides Chantrelles & shaggies (right in the driveway!) we have 2-3 kinds of turkeytails, and some odd ball ones I think are oysters....I am not sure about any but the shaggies.
So I leave them be.

Like "witches' Jelly" and these orange things:

and all sorts of turkey tails....morels, chantrelles, and those tint little psycho ones..............

So you raise Sp Sussex? I tried to get those this year but it didn't work out. Where did you get yours?

Best of luck in dealing with this, my heart goes out to you. Take care!
I actually just have one Sussex. I bought a Welsummer at the feed store last year and she grew up to be Sussex. I will not waste another penny buying chicks at the feed store! LOL She is a very nice bird though, although her eggs are small and the exact opposite of chocolate brown. I bred her to my Legbar rooster and kept two pullets. One looks legbar and the other is dark brown with some mottling just like her mom. The darker one started to cough today. They were raised by a broody and are not vaccinated. I'm going to treat her for a respiratory bug and hope it isn't Marek's related.

WOW I worked my fanny off today !

Gutted an entire double coop...10 x 10, and even emptied all 12 nest boxes....vacuumed all the dust out (and I was choking at this point) and then took down the screens & washed them...added fresh cedar shavings & fresh sweet grass hay to all the nest boxes (and I was so seriously filthy at this point) and then dusted for cobwebs, clean the light fixtures..etc

I have a hot date with NPIP next Wednesday...so gotta clean everything.
Clean clean clean !

Saturday we remove insulation from the lean-to room on the side of the barn, as it disallows sufficient ventilation to the under-roof.

So all the brooders must be emptied & the whole room torn apart.
That will be another super-filthy day like today.

Hey there Chickielady! Just wanted to say that we named the silver cuckoo Maran we got from you Ruby! We also have Greta, Marlena (Ameraucanas) Roxie (our barred rock), Rhoda or Red (RIR), Bikini (American Game? Bantam), Goldie our Buff Orpington.
You've been very busy from the sound of it! We wish you the best in your inspection! I don't envy all the work you are having to get done. We're still working on both the outdoor brooder design and the painting the wood for the coop.

Hey there yourself !
Glad to see you have all the girls named !
Happy for you two to have a new family !

Cleaned out our coop today too. Not near as big as yours, ChickieLady.

Been having some real nice days...in between the rain and sheet showers.
