Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

We live on a busy street, with a river and a bird sanctuary nearby. When we first moved in there was a bald eagle in our yard eating a dead possum.. Not too long ago my fiancé was letting the chickens roam our property, he went inside to put something away and when he came back out there was a bald eagle on the ground next to the chickens as they fled in terror. I dunno what it is about our yard that attracts Eagles... We put some pinwheels and bird netting over the run as a precaution, they are also aware and will hide under the covered areas, even at the site of geese flying overhead. They haven't tried anything with the run. And also to the annoyance of my fiancé, I've been feeding the crows, I figure they will scare the Eagles away if they decide they like us enough to stick around

@Totalcolour has had crows stealing her chicks, & eggs from her coop for several years now.
She has a super Buffalo-like hot wire fence for her birds, but an open coop, and crows just walk in...despite her hanging dead crows around, etc.
Crows can be just as much a nusiance as hawks.
We here have had Ravens, and the nesting crows chase them off.
But the Ravens come back & zoom low for a good look.
The crows here come back year after year & nest in the same tree.
I can tell by the pair above our house, and the one has had half his flight feathers blown off...four years now, obviously they will never grow back from some injury.
So I know, the same birds come back every year.

We also have band tail Pigeons nest here...a group of 25-30.
BIG, quiet gray, white ring on the neck, dark band on the tail.
They scare me often as I think they are hawks, they are big !

We have Chicken Rustler coming tomorrow~ Be fun to see him & the missus again, and no doubt, Quincy.

Rustler is bringing HONEY.......

........ya know the Rustler is also the Bee Wrangler !

We are also making arrangements to meet up with Cowgirlgrace on the 3rd, exchanging chicks & eggs.
Then we are going north to Monroe.
Anyone need anything from down here back up there or up there to down here, PM me !

You need the no climb-no dig fence.
It is not really expensive...just requires time, some good wire cutters and a lawn chair..oh, and knee pads.

Above is my chick pen fence.
What you see at the foot of the fence is a section of 6' feild fence that is cut horizontally....ripped is a better word for those who understand how lumber is cut.
So a 6' fence can be ripped in 3 sections of 2'.....................right ?
I have to make sure cuz of my mathematical dislexia...................so I got 1 6' roll...to use as verticle fence, and 1 6' roll to rip for no dig.
The no climb part is cutting 2-4" sections of the fence off at sharp angles.
IT CUTS YOU !!!
We wrapped this around every wooden fence post (which is where terrestrial predators will try to climb (bobcats, mink, raccons, cougars)
AND we ran it along the top of the fence, and tied it with zip ties.
Presto...nasty spikes poke out & we have never had any critters try to make it over the fence.

So, to rip, you get the roll of fencing, a wire cutter, and sit in a lawn chair & cut..and cut & cut.
When you are done you cut the next 2' off.
When that is done, you unroll it at the foot of the outside of the fence, and bend every so many cut ends over so it is attached to the foot of your verticle fence, like you see in photo #1 & 2.
Cutting the fencing in 4" sections & zip tie to the top & posts gives you the "no climb" spikes on top of the fence.
It really is easy to do !
I have bird net over the top of the chick pen and a few coop pens, but not the free range pastures as seen on the left of the chick pens.

wow - nice set up you have for sure - our property is in such disaray its not even funny. We moved in, in Sept. 2014...previous owner never took care of her property 5 acres worth... she needed money so had a log company come in to initially take a couple trees... but the logging company took advantage and basically clear cut leaving everything unwanted behind.. its taken until now to see the ground in some areas, or just to see the area. Sadly the whole property is loaded with mass stumps now - We're having our chicken barn built here in couple months after the permits go through and then we can get a full fence around the property done and once my set is in the barn i wont have to worry about much anymore as long as my boy doesn't leave doors open..lmao

Went out to put birds to bed and found our petite little frizzle has prolapse - it's too later to do too much, but I at least have her separated and cleaned off. Hope it will go down some to help get it squared away --- *sigh* Poor thing just cant cut a break on things that happen to her.

She's been through a lot already in the past years and now this. I so would hate to have to cull her, since she's such a wonderful little bird. Even after all the injuries she's gone through from other birds trying to kill her, shes still just as sweet. Just have to tell thy self "if it has to be done, it has to be done" -- I'll just do what I can do and see if she gets better. She's either 3 or 4 years old now, pushing more towards 4.

This is the first time we've had this happen to one of our birds.

He said they were "1 white and 2 brown" when I asked him the breeds....lmao. I'm guessing one of your typical eggers. Americauna run rampant around here, so do leghorn. But then again they could be mutts.
I doubt he has a light, he's just got a bator laying around with no eggs in it or on theit way to it :p
And it's been cold and gloomy. They're probably waiting for real spring.
(Californian still getting used to "weather")

I'm definitely starting to think its due to the shitty weather. WHY ISNT IT ALWAYS 70° AND SUNNY D: WHAT DOES RAIN MEAN!?!

@CowboysAngel
How are baby fluffy butts? Does Romeo have new egglings already? Lmao. I found bantam chicks for sale....5 minutes from my house. 2 week olds amd their chicks have been popping today..so hopefully I'll be able to do a chickalong with you :D cochins and silkies!!! 2$ each

as long as they don't have a "runway" the eagles around here tend to stay away.
My first Eagle to dine in my yard within the last 6 month was in a smaller pen, just munching along looking regal, The second and third were in the front field when they were free ranging. The first only feathers were left, the second i scared the eagle away, he tried to take off with her, dropped since she was too heavy, and i was able to save, just a flesh wound.
