I'm a Washingtonian and recently found this thread..so great! I'm just getting the final touches on my coop and run. Having chickens is awesome!

Welcome!

Catface - I love the pictures of your chickens. They look so big and ..... fluffy!

chickielady - I just love, love, love your paintings especially the horses and the fox.

It's so funny. It was my husband's idea to get chicks, even though he says I wanted them first. NOW, on our drive home from a Military Appreciation Days at Ft Lewis/McCord, he talked about rigging up fencing to give our girls more outside area to roam. You know what that means....chicken math looks to be in my future. The thing is I would have to start doing something with all those extra eggs. (I had been thinking silently to myself how it would be nice to give more ground to my girls but it was only a thought and I had not voiced it to anyone. Now, watch him try and blame me for this.)

Oh, my girls have now started to roost in the rafters of their coop. Yay!
Make sure the rafters are not far from the ground...chickens, especially large fowl & heavy breeds can come down hard, and end up with really bad Bumble foor injuries, and once they are infected with coliform bacteria, it is almost impossible to get rid off, and the birds have to be caged, foot debrided, and irrigated almost daily, and rebandaged.
A best bet for heavy & large breeds is a roost no more than 3-4 feet off the ground, and plenty of coop litter (hay, shavings, etc) to break their fall.
Bumble foot is a serious bummer !

I tried to dig out all the comfrey in the garden last month and now have 4 large stands of it again to dig out….It is pretty and the bees and hummers love it, but it never goes away once planted. i did see a comfrey at the special garden nursery near me that says it doesn't spread. It was a beautiful tri-color with yellow white and green foliage and the purple flowers.

I had hoped to be free yesterday so i could have met You in Monroe or something…..especially if i had known You wanted mint….I have Peppermint, chocolate mint and spearmint……Can send You some small plants in the mail if You like…..

I am happy to send Comfrey root to anyone….

Chickielady, Your artwork is amazing….Like the more modern ones toooo….
thank you !

I could handle it better if I had some sort of reason why! I've raised dozens of chicks and NEVER seen something like this!
I agree...it is a mind blower, but some babies can be traumatized simply by the shipment, and you think of them as humans= each one has a different personality, and a different immunal system, and temperment. Some can handle 'it', and some are so physcho that they can flip out & hit the roof and break their own necks at the sound of a car horn, a 1/4 mile away.

@OverEggstended I'm so sorry you are losing chicks! I hope it stops

and praying for you.

@Chickielady you are an amazing artist! I have wanted to paint for a long time and took an oil painting class but stopped when I got pregnant with my son (who's 9 now!) We are moving later this year and after we are settled I would like to pick this up again (my youngest will be going into kindergarten).

So, I have a question - do any of you have Poison Hemlock and if so, what have you done to get rid of it? We have discovered it where we had planned on having a large chicken run. Now the run will have to be much smaller until we get rid of it. Any ideas of how to get rid of it safely without using poison (since this will be run and pasture) would be much appreciated. It is growing over a large area.
Thanks!
What I am doing is having a hard time planning out a goat run.............and thankyou for the compliments, I never think of myself as 'amazing' but rather who/what occupies within me that is the genius full of talent...we all know who she is, your inner Goddess. And by all means, get a starter set of oils and PLAY !!!

So out of the chicks we've hatched all happy healthy- our Lavenders have dropped in numbers - went from 39 Lavs to 18. Someone today came to pick out 11 and tomorrow have an appointment for a lady to pick out 11 LF Cochins -

Also received my Washington state UBI number yay! Just have one more hurdle to do and I'll be all set. Even finally got to register to be able to take CCs - yay! Just need the website done -

Of course the set of eggs I'm about to start for June is our last batch for a while, since my barn is going to be built and we have a trip and family coming out - gives me time to finish squaring everything up I guess
