Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hello, Am looking for a pair of girls / silkies ? any age, egg laying ability not necessary to help foster new chicks. The broodie hens i currently have are not willing to foster chicks other than their own and have often tried to hurt others. Anyone in the Arlington to Seattle area?
Thanks,eliz

Hi Eliz,

The breeder I just got my two silkie girls from is actually raising cochins to brood her silkies eggs/chicks! Not sure why, as I am not very knowledgeable of either breed but I thought it was interesting.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/380239405384808/ you could try here - several cochins and also a couple of persistent broodies advertised.

Will hens just take on random chicks? None of my hens like any new chicks and will attack them. Even my broody wouldn't let new chicks in with her once they were about a week old. Most of my girls are so aggressive to the little ones that I have to keep the separate until the little ones are big enough to fight back.

Can you put the new chicks in a brooder or under a heat lamp? I hope they are OK.
Hi,i don't know….the several broodies i have right now with chicks are not friendly toward others….but years ago i had a hen who would take on any chick so that was what i was hoping to find…..

Thanks Coop de doo, after speaking with a breeder from craigslist, to start what i had hoped to do, its better to have a hen already comfortable here rather than include the stress of moving from their home and what they know.

Hello Carolyn, Chickielady, :)
I do have a few Blue, Black waiting for splash, (Jeanine, Pamela Maynard, Karen Carpenter) a few Mahoganies,(Sandhill, Chicken on the hill) and a flock of Salmon-blue Salmon (PasoFino, and Thanks to Mia for introducing me to Jeanine's line and Jeanine for beautiful birds)…I used to have both Kable and E-Jo males from Jeanine, but my main boy is a Kable son Kool. Fudge line has always been Jeanine-Rob. Kim, Rob and Michelle all have VERY noteworthy birds……Jeanine is backkkkkkkk , Yeah, but is now living in Levan (?), Utah and will be selling eggs again when time permits.
Health and work has kept me from doing much breeding and am glad to have a bit more time to visit with everyone here whom i have missed.

You've been missed! Sorry to hear about health problems, I hope you're up to snuff again, take care!!!!

I tried giving my birds a nice tub filled with potting soil, sand, and DE. They refused to use it. They would rather dig up my potted plants or just make a hole in their run.

Yes, I know I haven't posted here in a long while. Just to much going on. So Hello to anyone new since I was last on.

BTW @Chickielady is it possible to actually be drinking to much kombucha? That stuff is addictive. I've finally been able to split off of a scoby for a 5th jar.

To be clear wasn't saying it was totally ineffective against mites (although I find other things more effective), those are opinions and vary by person, but there are actual university studies and hard facts that show it's useless as a wormer. That's all.
I agree, as a wormer it is pretty useless, but has its uses as I have stated. Most folks that have a woodstove will have equal benefits (in my opinion) with their ashes saved for use in the dust bath.
