Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Amazing how much they look like slight Bielefelders ! Awesome birds!
Really cool chicken tracter, too ! Love to see the whole thing !

Thanks! I don't know why my phone posted the pic so small. It's the first time I've posted a pic with my new phone. They do resemble a slight Bielefelder. How do you like yours? I'm wanting some docile birds in the spring - well, super sweet roos. I'm going to get Dominique hatching eggs but may try Bieles or Rhodebar too. I will post some pics of the tractor if I can find them on my computer.

I live up in Whatcom County.  Is there a certain place that you all buy chicks/chickens in Washington, Oregon or California?  I would much prefer buying them when they wouldn't have to ship so far!  I'd rather buy chicks that are day old up to 6 weeks old.  My very first chick order was from My Pet Chicken.  I felt so bad that they were in the mail for 2 days!  Our feed stores only have chicks in the spring too.

You might want to check out the swaps forum on BYC, I think they have it divided to be able to find local. I've popped in and have seen fertile eggs available too if you have an incubator. Other than that try asking around, maybe someone has a breed or more that you want and can work with you.

Ok, found some...my husband made it this past spring...I am painting the wood part, so far it's primed.

I think these were before he added the roost. We just put in a kitty litter pan with nesting material for a portable box. We may add a built in one and enclose it more but it will make it heavier. This was my husband's first construction project anything like this so I think he did rather well :) They used to like to sleep in the tote but now they have the roost - different set of girls now though.

That's beautiful! Nicely done!

I have portobellos in the refrigerator. Someone turned down the temperature, and when I went to use them tonight, they were frozen. Fresh frozen, no less. I sliced them up anyway and used them in our fritata and they were just like fresh ones. So now, I am going to try a test... freezing the small portobellos when I bring them home from the store.

I have a great recipe for mushrooms & chicken with veggies and fettuccine. I'll find it and post it for all the mushroom addicts. It is very tasty, and, very quick from start to table. I love that kind of recipe.

Need some suggestions. I have 3 two year old hens, 2 are laying consistently and my Barred Rock is more miss than hit. She is adorable and the most personable lady in the group. I also have 5 pullets coming up in the ranks that are 5 months old. It looks like ONE of the pullets is a Roo.. sighs. I can't keep him. Is a RIR and is very sweet.. easy to handle. What do I do? I need to thin the flock but if I get rid of the Roo.. I can't replace him with just one bird.. I can't put the Barred into the stew pot.. I need help.. I want to have a flock of 8 layers.

Give the barred a minute. Two years old is about prime age. She may be doing a light molt, maybe has a parasite, stress, etc. Barreds have been heard of to lay two eggs in a day during warmer months, so her molt vacation maybe a slow down. A few of my girls completely stop for weeks and weeks. Then I end up with an egg inside an egg or double yolkers for a bit.
