Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I'm really feeling distraught! I ordered 10 chicks from MPC, one died on day 3 and I think THREE others are roosters!

. I don't mind keeping one of them. That leaves me with only 6 hens. I'm thinking next time I'll just order 25 from McMurrey (not straight run, still order females) and then I'll for sure wind up with 4 females and then just sell the rest. Then I'm thinking I should just buy 4 more pullets? I don't know if I can handle raising baby chicks, getting attached to them and then having to give some away. Just going through the pain of watching and wondering if they are Roos or not is killing me!!!
Thanks for listening to my Monday morning rant!

I didn't catch what breed you're working with. I'm sorry you're having issues with the provider... that company seems to carry some if the off the beaten path breeds, right up my alley.

That's what I liked about them. I have a GLW, that I think is a Roo, 2 SLW, I think one is a Roo, 3 Andelusians that I think are all females, 1 Australorp that I think is a female and two RIR that I think one may be a Roo....sob

Sometimes that 90% assurance of female is like scratch ticket odds. Yes, odds may be 1/4 but that's for the whole game and not individual rolls of tickets, lol. When I started I purchased from a feed store where they had chicks as pullets, ended up with 1/3 BO being a roo.... that percentage plummeted at that rate. Lol. I was surprised by the "pullets" being so young, when I was a kid, cockerels had obvious boy things happening and pullets obviously didn't. A person would pay more for the older birds, of course, and chicks were still available. I wonder if sex links have anything to do with the shift?

I thought two of my SLW were roos based on comb and wattles, turned out the third bird is a little different than the other two in color and development, but all are hens...

That is encouraging! Here's a pic of why I'm thinking Roo. (I have read multiple times on BYC that Wyandottes are hard to tell the gender of as they're growing.)

Thinking Roo here. They are only 4 weeks old in these pics.
