Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I guess I will just jump in here and introduce myself. I've been on BYC for a couple weeks and was just referred to this thread. I'm in Clark County. Grew up raising horses, we always had a few chickens and a few other animals roaming around 5 acres. I live in town now (although not in city limits) with my husband and 2 kids, we have 1/4 acre. I will be getting my first flock (of my adult life anyway) in February.

Yay! Welcome! Love the support and wealth of knowledge I've gained from members on here. I'm sure you will find the same. What breeds and how many chickens?

I think it was about 10 days. They have a Buy it Now listing on ebay, so you can see the cost in dollars and the approximate shipping time. I bought it through ebay and paid with paypal, if I'm remembering correctly.
Thanks so much Carolei! I'm totally going to order that today. It's exactly what I want too! Battery powered since I don't have power to my coop and not light sensing either. Awesome! Thank you for sharing the info. I had scoured the Internet and that one never came up in my search. It's also a lot cheaper than the ones I had considered settling for. So excited!!!

I would like to get 5 chicks. As far as breeds, I will be getting them from the feed store and am waiting to receive their chick list to see for sure which breeds I can get at the same time. I would like a mixed flock that includes Plymouth Rocks and Buckeyes, and maybe an Ameracauna/EE. I also am interested in Welsummers and to a lesser extent Orpingtons and Australorps. Haha! So to answer your question I have no idea which breeds I will end up with!

Lol! That's called chicken math. You will always end up with more than what you planned.

Are they just for eggs or meat too? I have 8 hens (not including my silkies)... My best layers have been my Rhode Island Red, Australorp, and Barred Rock. They have continued to lay and lay and lay! Amazing! My 2 EE girls stopped at the end of summer but I remember when I got my first blue egg! I recently lost my cuckoo Maran to a bobcat and she was my darkest egg layer. Makes me want to get a Welsummer too so I can get a colorful basket. Someone gave me a Blue Maran during the summer but I'm not sure I've ever gotten an egg from her.

Eggs primarily. I'm not opposed to chicken stew later.

That's what I said too... It's actually a lot harder than I thought it would be to put them in freezer camp. I have an older one I will need to do this soon and I am having a hard time even though i didn't raise her as a baby... I just got her this summer. That's why I try not to name them. But I know I will have to soon.

My Chocolate Orpington has been giving me an egg every single day even though it's now December and we are down to 9 hours of light per day! Her eggs are light brown to pinkish and they are medium size at this point. I don't know if they will get bigger or not. She's been laying for a month now. My others I got from My Pet Chicken and are 12 weeks old so I won't see how they lat until around February or March probably. I did get an Australorp from them and she is soooo sweet! I ordered 10 from them. One died on day two, a Buckeye, it was very tiny and just not strong. One thing I'm happy about is that I ordered all girls and I got all girls! They say on their website that they have a 90% accuracy on sexing of chicks. I was prepared for one rooster but I didn't get one! I don't like how the other hatcheries put in "packing peanuts" of several roosters! My Pet Chicken lets you order as few as 3 chicks for our area after January 25th. I wanted 5 chickens but I wound up ordering 10 thinking some may not make it or some might be roosters. Well 9 made it and none are roosters! Doesn't matter, I'm so glad I ordered my "extras" (chicken math). My extras are my 3 Andelusians and they are SOOOOOO cool! I thought they would be unfriendly and flighty like I had read about and that's not the case! My Splash Andelusian "Duck" is my friendliest most outgoing of the bunch! The Australorp is the most docile and even all the other chickens love her. My Choc. Orpington I bought from our local feed store at Point of Lay so I could have some instant gratification on eggs...she has not disappointed! The difference between buying the POL and the chicks is the relationship. My chicks I know and they know me and trust me. The Orpington is slowly warming up to us but still doesn't really trust us. But the other side to that is it will probably be easier to put her in freezer camp when the time comes versus our "babies" that we have raised from chicks!

Welcome to the Washington Thread!
