Yaaaaaaa no more having to worry about those roosters.. more room for more hens.. which one are you still looking for?

I haven't been on for awhile I have a few questions I need advice on. I had a hen go broody and I don't have a rooster, I managed to find five fertile eggs from a neighbor and put them under her along with the two dozen she ha slated and stolen from the other girls! To make a long story short none hatched so late night I slipped five chicks from the feed store under her and she took right to them.

My question is I have heard their is a good chance she will continue to go broody in the future so I was thinking of getting a rooster. What breed would you recommend and where would you suggest I look? I really don't like the idea of the poultry auction because of the chance of disease. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. She is a white Plymouth Rock if it matters.

Thanks
Ken

We had two Silkies still sitting after we took their Easter chicks away but my daughter candled the remaining eggs and the rest of the eggs in the nest were rotten. Of course the hens have a clutch of new eggs under them since they have been collecting eggs to sit on and my daughter is not collecting them from under the hens.

The problem is that the chicks will be staggered but I may have my daughter swap the Silkie eggs out for the started Easter Egger eggs if any develop. Hopefully the two hens will keep the eggs under them and if everything hatches at the same time my hope is that they will decide to leave the nest with the Easter Egger chicks. My Orpington chicks are more valuable than the Easter Eggers but I might even give the hens some of them to get the hens off the nest. When I designed the coop I did not make it ADA accessible so I can't get in there with my walker or scooter.

I do not any experience with roosters... but you can check with ChickenHermit, she was looking to give away a rooster...

From ChickenHermit "One of my bantam cochin roos might be a particularly good fit- he's extremely calm, totally fine being picked up and held, and is really, really gorgeous. He's a partridge, so he's all red and black, and almost exactly a year old."

I love roosters and always have several of them. Personally I would recommend an ameraucana or an Easter Egger rooster. If you breed him to your hens the chicks will be good layers and also should produce green eggs. If you want to sell the babies, the green and blue layers are way easier to sell that barnyard mix that lay brown eggs.

There is a good chance your hen will go broody again. That said, I had a production type hen that went broody a couple of years ago and never did it again since. I don't recommend getting anything from the auction. There are lots of people on here that can direct you to a reputable person that can line you up with a rooster. I usually have EE cockerels I give away, but I'm out at the moment. I would guess in about a month when people realize their feed store pullets are actually cockerels you'll be able to find a good selection of free chickens on Craigslist.

Finally got the coop out to the yard and on its base. Pavers are not actually as evenly level as they could be.

How bad of an idea would it be to shim the space between coop/base vs. removing coop and base and trying to re-level?

Shouldn't be a problem at all using shimmy since the coop structure and the chickens are not that heavy.

I wouldn't recommend shimmying anything over 2 inches in height.
