Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

My mother's day present from my broody Welsummer was a 100% hatch of nine littles. She is a first time momma and doing very well with them so far.

Wonderful!! I have my first broody hen sitting on 4 eggs - one of my year-old BCMarans. I hope she's a good momma - she's pretty fierce in protecting the eggs.
And just in case anyone is looking for a young cockerel to add to a backyard flock, I have a slew of 8 week olds. I think I am running about 75% males this year. Will process any not sold in a month or two. All good stock, no hatchery.

--Olive Eggers (Welsummer x Blue Wheaten Ameraucana)
--Welsummers
--Black-laced Red Wyandottes
--Brown Leghorn

I just hatched out some crosses of my only rooster, a BCM and my Ameraucana and Welsummer hens, plus some bought pure BCM eggs (for different genetics). The pure Marans babies are a little wild and certainly don't enjoy being handled and I too got mostly males. They are only 2.5 weeks now, but I may have 3-4 males out of the 5 that hatched! This may be the end of my Marans breeding program. Of the crosses, I have 4, one looks like a blue wheaten pullet, though the dad is BCM, one is a minky brown with muffs and maybe a pea/straight combo comb.

Did you have any Ameraucana males and can you tell me the temperaments of them if you did, and the Wellies? I've been in contact with the breeder (that we both got birds from) and I'm trying to decide if I want to replace the Ams with the yellow legs with more Ams or Wellies, or wait for him to hatch something else. I do enjoy my Ams, so I may try those again, (love the blue eggs), but my husband loves the brown speckled Wellie eggs. Still experimenting with breeds that I want to try working with or continue with. Hatching out Dominiques next week since I've been wanting to try those for a while now.

Well it's that time of year isn't it! Fun seeing all the broody chickens with their little chicks. My broody hen is doing a great job too! She is taking the little ones outside now (hatched May 5th-6th) and they are enjoying this nice warm weather.

I have a TON of extra chicks - I had a much better hatch rate than I expected. My crosses were University of Arkansas Blue egg layers crossed to White Leghorn/Ameraucana hybrids - the goal being lots and lots of blue eggs! The barring gene came from the Leghorn side of the cross.

I know the question wasn't directed to me but the BBS Ameraucanas I had both the cockerels were very friendly, the sister was a very productive blue egg layer! Sadly I lost the best cockerel in the middle of winder (decided to roost somewhere else and never came home) then I lost the sister who laid 7 eggs/week to a raccoon attack in the early morning right before I got home from work

. I got my eggs from the East coast.

Luckily I had her eggs in the fridge still that I took out and hatched from, got 3 daughters that I currently have but they are the above crosses mentioned (Ameraucana/Leghorn) both barred and black, all 3 with beards. Very productive birds but definitely brooding tendency!

My Ameraucana roosters have always been friendly, pleasant birds. I have two now (one black, one blue). The wheaten male I got from our mutual source was the nicest of them all. I just sold him to someone with small children as a flock rooster because he is such a sweetie. The Wellie roosters are not friendly in the same way.....very business minded which makes them excellent flock guardians. My best Wellie rooster is an excellent watchdog, takes great care of the hens......makes me laugh but they actually seem to kinda swoon over him.....always wanting to be the one to roost next to him, follow him everywhere, eat the tidbits he offers them. He is also good at dancing for the hens, while the Am roos are a bit less courtly. I have had him rush towards me with his hackles up a few times when emotions have been high in the pasture (like he has been alarming over a hawk or neighbor's dog) but if I just stop and look at him he stops, then turns away. I think it goes with the highly protective nature he has.....but I would be cautious with him if I had kids and wouldn't let them in with him unsupervised.

Good luck with your broody hatch!

Oh my, all this talk about little chicks makes me want to get more of them. But I have the maximum my coupe can really hold. Well technically maybe I could get three more but then that would be really crowded. I have 12 feet of roost space. I would love some blue egg layers.

ooooo, those Super Blue Egg Layers are tempting!
I just got a couple of leghorns this year (just babies now) to cross with my Ams.
and you are temptingly close, since I visit my mom in Edmonds........are they sexable at hatch?....don't think I could handle more roosters this spring, since I have a herd of them already.

@Gatewayto We have pigs too and we feed beets & tops to them as a laxative if they are constipated. Not sure if it is the same for chickens.

Need a little help with our Snowflakes:
She is 4 months old, normally really energetic and running around with her head high. She had been like this for the last 3 days.. not eating much.. not drinking much.. Just stand with her head lower and looking sad. Seem like she is sick. She does peck a little but not too much. Even given her treats couldn't motivate her.

I though she could have coccidiosis, but it doesn't look that way since her dropping doesn't have blood.

We separated her and force feed her (open up her mouth and put food and water down her month) and bring her in to the house at night to sleep to keep warm.
