Sounds like poisoning, are they getting into something moldy or mushrooms?I put Louise back in the coop and she went out to the run for some scratch, then lay down in a corner. What is wrong with her? She *can* open her eyes, they aren't swollen, but appears that she just wants to rest with them closed.
Are mushrooms that grow in the grass poisonous for chickens? If so, we have a terrible problem. There are hundreds of mushrooms all over our yard that cropped up in the last couple weeks with the start of the rain. Help! Do I need to go scour the yard for them and get rid of them?
I think all mushrooms(could be wrong) are toxic to fowl. I don't have a lot but I do have some. My kids seem to not be eating them, they have 20,000sf to roam around and if you took all the mushrooms i have maybe 1-2sf of them. If you have a lot then they may just be eating them. I don't know what your ratio is. I would glove up the little kids and have them help ya pick them out of the yard. Maybe you could give your sick hen a little honey to help flush out her digestive system(I read that honey does that to birds).
I put her back out quite a while ago and when I went to clean off the roost before bedtime everyone was heading to bed except Louise. She's on the roost in the run; it's supposed to get to 35 tonight, guess I should go get her and keep her in the house since she's not well enough to roost with everyone else. Thelma was keeping her company though, we'll see if she's still out there with her. I might just let the two of them snuggle on the outdoor roost all night together if her buddy stays with her. Honey is a good idea, I've heard molasses can do that too?
