I have a friend here in Raymond who has her nerves "burned"
I did get burned, but it didn't help. I guess the bones are pressing on the spinal cord itself. Don't want to burn that.
I may be interested.I am not showing anything this year...........anyone wants Barnevelders, Sulmtalers, let me know.
I DO want more Blue Copper Marans....I am looking into that.
Welcome! Do you have sand in the coop or in the run? Seems like sand would get really cold but maybe not. If this winter is anything like last winter you will probably need some straw. If anything just to build a winter break. Last winter I put clear plastic sheeting on two sides of my run. This helps keep the wind out and helped the chicken stay warmer. I really hope this winter isn’t so bad but we’ll see. There are lots of great people here. There is also at Eastern Washington thread but it is not as active.Eastern Washingtonian here. I'm new to BYC, I have 6 crazy hens, 4 Parrots, 3 goofy dogs, 2 cats, three teens and 1 husband! Getting ready for the cold and snow to set in! Trying to decide tomorrow if I should throw down some straw or are my girls good with sand. Coop is draft free with plenty of ventilation. Decisions ...decisions!

Are your runs covered? My run is not covered and I want something to keep the mud down this winter. I always read that Strock can lead to mold also. So last year I used hey, I would throw it down on top of the snow once in a while. Maybe I’ll try straw this year.I dont get the mold issue with straw, especially on the drier side of the mountains. That's all great grandma and grandma used and they lived in the Hermiston area.
I use straw here on the wet side in the runs for mud control that doesn't destroy foot feathers and builds up the soil level. Less mud issues each year as the ground level has gotten higher. No mold.
I use pine shavings and deep litter in the main coop since it's large and dirt floor. Silkie houses are little and have shavings that I change. Silkies are normally ground sleeping cuddlers. They need warm bedding.
Sounds like you definitely have it readySweet! I have sand in both the run and the coop, chopped straw in the nest boxes. I have already put clear plastic on 2 sides as well and the other side is tucked up to a wall of straw. I think they are good, I think I just love the smell of straw and always wanna throw it down everywhere...lol. But it sounds like after reading some other threads, I should stay away from adding straw due to mold issues.
