Okay, so you have a wood floor with sand on top? I'm starting to wonder if a wood floor might be a good idea but I don't know. The dirt floor with shavings on top has worked well so far, but I am a little nervous about how it'll work this winter. Oh man, if water gets in there it's gonna be a mess!! My girls aren't big fans of the rain, luckily they have a covered porch area but they still seem to wander back inside. I'll just say, inside, is well used. Lol.

Thanks for the info!! I will definitely keep reading and asking!

Free Mixed Wood Arborist Chips

Free arborist wood chips available in North Seattle--about 15 cubic yards of arborist wood chips (this is what Ciscoe Morris says your garden needs!). You must take the whole load, and your location must have access for a dump truck--check overhead line clearance.

If interested, send an email with your name, address, and phone number. I'll call you to discuss the delivery.

Well shoot.
RIR's are not likely to go broody, or so the description of the breed says. Wanna bet?
I now have an official broody hen. The boss hen no less. She insists on setting on the eggs. Most of her breast feathers are gone. So, I pick her up (she really is a love) and move her gently over, gather the eggs and shoo her out to eat and drink. Yesterday she was being obstinate. When I moved her again, she had an egg under her. I have no idea how she held it while I moved her. sigh.
So now there is three play eggs under her. Another 15 days or so of this. sigh.
Heck, she ain't even 8 months old.

Mikey,

If possible put her in a wire-bottomed cage by her self. Provide food and water, but do not let her out (mine are about 2'x2'). Keep here there for three days. This has been a very effective way for me to break my broodies -- oh .. the cage should be off the ground. They are very uncomfortable because they don't really understand how they don't fall :)

Before I built my "solitary confinement" I would have hens go broody for way more than 21 days - they keep sitting and sitting waiting for the darn golf balls to hatch!

Good luck,

Dave

Wear a mask while working if you get these! They cause a horrible cough for me and my entire family. I've gotten them twice and I don't think I ever will again. They are great for the soil and for the chickens to dig in though.

Quote: Before I had a regular source of composted chicken bedding mulch, I'd get this every spring. It's especially nice if you have a large area of grass you want to smother, but a mask is a good idea. The mycorrhizae that break down the wood get into your lungs. It clears up after a day or two.
