Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

So I had 2 silkie hens raising my replacement layers. The 8 week old hatchery "ameraucana" are as big and heavy as their moms now.

And in an example of nature vs nurture, they act nothing like the silkies or half silkies, even though everyone was raised by friendly silkie moms.

These EEs fly onto everything and over the fence. The half breeds have always acted like silkies. They still don't fly onto anything that a silkie wouldn't even though they are capable.

I life some on here say you do not need to break a broody they won't hurt themselves you have a 6 lb bird that looses half it weight or a 12 lb bird that looses 1/2 they can die
okay needed to rant figure I can rant to you :lau

Well the silkies have all been smart enough to eat while broody. I don't bother breaking them. They have sat for 2 months max. In addition, I pull them off the nest and out of the house at least once a day so they will eat then.

All the large fowl have only sat for about a month before getting up. I take the eggs though.

I have heard of birds just wasting away and dying though.

I keep baby parrot food in the freezer and have no issues tubing birds several times a day. Being taken inside and subjected to that would probably break them fast. Sick once get back to eating quick.

I'm going to order another treadle feeder and try it with the silkie bachelors. It's worked great with the large fowl. They purposely shove that step down and get right in there. They are no nonsense with it now.

Another batch of rats is out. We've been getting half grown ones the last few days. Got 2 adults as well because we've a good team here. The rain and rising ground water level will help out.
