Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I don't check on the WA thread for a few days since everyone posts so much, then I check today and see that I'm not the only one who realized us WA folks talk too much, lol. Marking this so I can read from time to time. Really guys though, 53 pages in 4 days!?!?! I have way too much to catch up on now

itsren that is a very nice and touching story. THAT IS TRUE SPORTSMANSHIP ! ! ! ! As I said before it is NOT ALL ABOUT THE WIN ! ! ! !
When I was a kid I was invited by a neighbor to play little league. Now this was before T ball. I had to start with dads antique glove that was literally an overstuffed glove that had a leather lace between the fingers and thumb. I talked mom and dad into a new glove. I couldn't get the one I really wanted because it cost $12 so I made do with the cheap one it still cost $8. I still have that glove. I rode my bike 5 miles to practice / games. I worked hard and became a pitcher. Some coaches didn't want to play us if I was pitching. But because I had no support from home I soon got discouraged. Then in 7th grade I tried football. While I went to all practice and tried hard I wasn't too good at football. To make matters better there was no support at home. I heard that mom was in the stands for part of one game but don't know for sure.
While I am not a big sports fan. I do believe that if a child tries hard and does their best that is all that can be ask or expected. While winning is nice I also believe that EVERYBODY who puts forth their best effort deserves their fair share of time in play!
I have seen too many times where there is some star player who may not even show up at all practices but they get full play time. And then there is the one who may not have the same level of skills but they are there EVERYDAY and DO THEIR BEST. I believe they also deserve a fair share of play time. See while I am a very competitive person I am also about fairness and support. I believe the lessons of good sportsmanship are far more important than how to properly carry that trophy.
Win or not walk away with your head held high knowing that you have put forth your best effort.

Sportsmanship is what too many people have forgotten! And I love itsren's story!

There are so many subtle things that are taught by competitive endeavors, and I'm including things other than sports. Any kind of games or competitions. We all have to learn that it's ok to loose if you've done your best. If the ONLY reason you're playing is to be #1 you're playing for the wrong reason. If you can't loose and be a good sport about it, you need more practice at it. If you can't walk up to the winner and say congratulations, maybe you need to work on sportsmanship. And if players and coaches can't be good role models they should be banned! Kids learn from those they look up to. And if the parents see coaches that aren't teaching and practicing fair play and sportsmanship they should speak up. That's another thing their kids are going to learn, how to deal with things that need to be dealt with.

I wonder sometimes why our society thinks that baseball, football, basketball, etc. are the only way for our kids to learn the values of hard work, sportsmanship, physical endurance, team work, etc.??? An orchestra is the ultimate in teamwork, gymnastics, track and jump rope are physical, sportsmanship comes into play in everything from a game of Go Fish to chess.

Trophies for everyone when they're 4 years old, why not. When they're 8 I think they know the difference, but how about 3 cheers for the TEAM, didn't we have a lot of FUN, and now it's time for some well deserved cake and ice cream!

So, am I crazy in thinking I have a little roo on my hands when they're only 5 days old? Cocoa sure does a mighty fine job defending his little flock when the hand that feeds and cleans them comes in. That chick jumps at me and pecks me any time I reach in there. It's pretty funny right now. Doesn't help that the kids are cheering "Go Cocoa! Bite mom!"

Nope! sometimes you can tell, not just by actions, look at the combs, sometimes, if they protrude before the down has grown up over it you can tell, I did an experiment on one of my hatches, all the chicks with the protruding comb were banded, and they all turned out to be roos! I guess I was lucky, not all breeds present that way, but I' thought I would try my own sexing experiment. Ok, not to put a plug in for the Buckeyes, but.....they always run and jump into my hand!! I've hatched a few different breeds, they so far are the only ones who have!!! I JUST LOVE MY BUCKEYES!!

Quote: I use wood stove pellets that have no additives.
Just be aware that pellets expand as the get wet from droppings...
1 cup pellets = 3 cups of wood sawdust
The reason I use it is due to composting... I already have enough sand in my yard so I use the pellets and dropping to add to my bad ground areas. It works rather well!

OH? I didn't know that some with out additives?? I was kinda worried the last time I bought some, I thought I would try it on my chicks, I think it had preservatives, I didn't like that they were pecking at it and I moved them off to shavings quick! Thanks for the info, maybe I will try it again, only be more diligent about looking at the bag!

Oh, phooey. I had a whole post ready about whether raw green beans are poisonous (conclusion: probably not in anything but enourmous quantities) and I hit return twice in succession and it went away!

Anyway: do an experiment. Google "raw green beans are poisonous" and read the first ten articles. Then google "onions are toxic to animals" and do the same. The difference is remarkable.

(I've spent a lot of time in my life doing research and getting paid for it, even; what my BS detector is telling me from what I find on-line is that there's wide-spread belief in various culture that raw green beans are poisonous, but that the evidence is not in, while raw kidney beans, especially, are straight-up very bad for you, and home canned green beans were once the leading cause of botulism poisoning).

And now I have to go feed the last pen of chooks, do another round of checking for eggs, and then go out and grocery shop until I fall off my feet.

Hmm, I will google the green beans, but, as a tech, I've seen onion toxicity as well as grape toxicity. Man I LOVE green beans!! LOL!

Wow, the new thread is filling fast! Good to be here. Hope everyone's well.

My friend's dog went home last night, and now my own dog is laying the guilt on thick for being left alone. Nothing is as sad as a lonely old dog, who keeps getting up and tottering around to try to find her friend. *sigh*

I'm sorry dog, but we just can't go out and adopt another dog right now.

I feel so guilty about it. The irony is, my friend's dog had so much fun over here that she wanted to come back with us, whined for a while after we left her house, and isn't eating all her food today. But she needs to stay with her owner. Dang it, my dog keeps looking up and me and giving me the sad Disney eyes.

Now she's outside looking out the gate for her buddy. I feel like such a heel.

I realize your pup is older, but, the one thing I would worry about is all the great animals they would have to chase here!! LOL!
