Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Well, I had to have an intervention in the brooder. After having to rescue small bits of paper towel out of tiny beaks during multiple games of paper towel tag, I switched the bedding to sand. I was worried about whether this was a good idea or not. I had to laugh.... not even 5 minutes later, Latte, my 8-day-old yellow chick was having the time of her life taking a dust bath. Now, less than an hour later, it's Blackie's turn. Watching tiny chicks dust bathe like a pro is quite comical. They appear to still be eating their food, so, hopefully, the sand will work out. Because of my allergies to the pine shavings, there is no way I can have those in the house at all.

I tell ya - these four chicks learn everything so much faster than my first 3 girls did. It is quite amazing to watch.

As for the big girls - I hope they are OK tonight. The fluffballs went to bed wet. The sky was falling and they didn't even seem to notice one bit. I had to take my daughter to Girl Scouts, so I didn't have any time to blow-dry them.

Mine go out in the rain if they feel like. Some don't seem to notice the rain much. None of them were happy with Monday's weather. Only the silkie cockerel came out to see what was going on when I opened the door to leave in the afternoon. Usually that door opening is like a can opener to a cat. He only came out because that pen has a good tarped roof on it. He saw I wasn't bringing treats and went back in.

The EE chicks are still in there with the silkies since the silkies snuggle at night with the cockerel in front nearest the door. I need to make shelves in the big coop. I can't get 9 of the birds to roost. They prefer a large flat surface to lay on. Of the other 18, a few of them switch it up between laying on the board and roosting. The brahma chicks are coming up on 18 weeks and getting big. Where all 6 of them and the two ameraucna's used to be able to fit above the nest boxes, only 5 fit now. Usually Mongo is up on the board with the ameraucanas, but the last two nights it's been Little Bit. She snuggles in between the two and is nice and warm.

I gave my birds the choice of the 2x2 or the 2x4 laid flat and they've chosen the 2x4. DH says we can get some 2x6s and see if they like that even better. That should give them plenty of space to lay and still let the poop drop down.

I'm waiting patiently for the ameraucana pullet to lay. She's 26 weeks old and doesn't look anywhere near close. She does like to snuggle still. She's my parrot of a chicken. Nothing better than leaning in on a neck and watching all the little chickens going about their lives.

My poor girls were so wet when they went into bed. They were dying to get out of the pen for a while before bed so I had to stand around with them in the rain. I think they should change the expression from 'mad as a wet hen' to 'sad as a wet hen.' Still, they would have been much more sad if they weren't allowed out for a bit.

CloverLeaf -- Looking forward to saying hello on Saturday, we're getting excited for our trip to Corvallis and the oregon coast!

I agree. Mine weren't mad at all. They were happy as could be. They got to free-range after quite a few days being stuck in the run or in the tractor. Yesterday it was so foggy that I was *hoping* the bald eagles vision would be impaired. At least, because of the rain, they hung out under bushes or right up against the building making a quick fly-by attack more difficult.

Good morning everyone! getting ready to head out to work!

itsren that is a very nice and touching story. THAT IS TRUE SPORTSMANSHIP ! ! ! ! As I said before it is NOT ALL ABOUT THE WIN ! ! ! !
When I was a kid I was invited by a neighbor to play little league. Now this was before T ball. I had to start with dads antique glove that was literally an overstuffed glove that had a leather lace between the fingers and thumb. I talked mom and dad into a new glove. I couldn't get the one I really wanted because it cost $12 so I made do with the cheap one it still cost $8. I still have that glove. I rode my bike 5 miles to practice / games. I worked hard and became a pitcher. Some coaches didn't want to play us if I was pitching. But because I had no support from home I soon got discouraged. Then in 7th grade I tried football. While I went to all practice and tried hard I wasn't too good at football. To make matters better there was no support at home. I heard that mom was in the stands for part of one game but don't know for sure.
While I am not a big sports fan. I do believe that if a child tries hard and does their best that is all that can be ask or expected. While winning is nice I also believe that EVERYBODY who puts forth their best effort deserves their fair share of time in play!
I have seen too many times where there is some star player who may not even show up at all practices but they get full play time. And then there is the one who may not have the same level of skills but they are there EVERYDAY and DO THEIR BEST. I believe they also deserve a fair share of play time. See while I am a very competitive person I am also about fairness and support. I believe the lessons of good sportsmanship are far more important than how to properly carry that trophy.
Win or not walk away with your head held high knowing that you have put forth your best effort.
