Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

OMGosh, so I was 300 something posts behind on the other Washington thread, then skipped to the end and found that I was no longer on the right thread anyways! LOL. I found my way here and now am 400 something posts behind!!!! My brain is not recouped enough to read all that, so I really hope I did not miss anything important. Hoping that no one lost any birds, friends or family members and that all is well with everyone.
The weekend before last started a good week of sickness in our house. We hardly ever get sick, and when ever any of us do (like the flu) it only is a 12-24 hour thing. Our first two kids held to that and then the next two that got sick one held our for 3 days and the other for four. Kid number 5 did not get sick but I did half way through last week. DH did not get it thank goodness and I am very glad that both of our DD's are fine now as they leave for Disney Land with my BIL and his wife this coming weekend.
Also, one of our DD's had her first MMA tournament this past Saturday. She got 2nd place out of three, the girl that got 1st place was at least 4in taller than our DD and had a huge reach advantage on her. But even with that she only lost by 1 point. I told her that just because she got a medal and a certificate (all the kids got one of these cheesy things) that it does not mean that she does not still need to work on her technique. I do not like that every one gets a trophy or medal these days when it comes to kids sports. I feel that it makes the kids think that they do not need to work any harder to get first place or to win the game because "every one is a winner". I don't mean this in a harsh way, I think my DD and most of the kids there did great and tried their hardest, but there are winners and losers for a reason and I praise my DD and most of the others for getting up there and doing their best but the goal is to have fun, learn, and work as hard as you can to win or get to 1st place. But this is all just my opinion!
Lastly, I have 31 eggs in the incubator (and I will have to look up what day they are on) about 2 week along and they are all progressing. Holy cow I did not expect them all to be good and to survive but that works for me.
Well first I would respectfully disagree with you. IMHO When it comes to kids in sports there are NO LOSERS just those who's skills are not as fine tuned for whatever reason. They ALL need to be encouraged and praised no matter how good or bad they are. Also I am a bit confused by your comment "I praise my DD and most of the others for getting up there and doing their best but the goal is to have fun, learn, and work as hard as you can to win or get to 1st place. " See first you say have fun, learn and work as hard as you can. But then comes the TO WIN !! IMHO IT should be less about the win. See Can't everybody be in the parade. Somebody has to be there to watch it go by. Otherwise it's just s traffic jam !!!

I need to go get all my shots updated. I hadn't had any since 1995. I had a DTaP a couple months ago. New baby in the family so we took care of the risk. I needed a tetanus with how much I cut and scrape myself outside all the time. I really have no excuse for not getting them. What age to they recommend shingles vaccine at?

OMG the debate is on!!!!! It's on both channels I'm gonna miss FLIPPERRR !!!!!

I agree. There's obviously so much more that's wrong with this darn world these days, but if kids can't even play games without getting upset that their losing team didn't get a trophy, they shouldn't be playing. Forget about self esteem. How about some good hard work!!! Hard work is what begets self esteem, not trophies for losing. Ugh.

I have no problems with having blood drawn or getting stuck. But the takers are so serious I start saying, in an alarmed way, ouch, ouch, ooh, ouch b4 they're even close to sticking that dang thing in. I get a smile and a chuckle or two afterwards. Best thing is, I'm concentrating on their facial response so I don't feel the stick.

Needles and I just don't get along. Getting blood drawn is something I avoid like the plague! They can never seem to find a vein and I come out looking, and feeling, like a pin cushion! When I had to have surgery the nurse thought the IV would be more comfortable for me if she did it "better". Dang that burned and hurt like crazy, then to top it off the back of my hand was numb for a couple of weeks!

You came down with influenza ? Be sure to report that to your local health department if your Dr has not already done so.
Just going to throw this out there.....the flu shot is a killed virus. You can't actually get the flu from the shot. Now if you had the nasal mist, you can. It does take 2 weeks or more for the flu shot to build the antibodies in your system so you can more easily fight the flu. You can still get the flu but it is usually a virus that the current shot doesn't cover. You must have gotten exposed to it before the shot took any real effect. That sucks! I had that happen once and I was a little ticked off. But I had a family friend who is a Doctor, explain it to me. I wasn't quite so mad, but wished I had gotten it earlier. I get one now because my stepson has virally induced asthma and we try to avoid getting sick the best we can. But I am not sure I would bother if he didn't have asthma.

I was reassured of the fact the the shot was a killed virus, but the timing was terrible. Now it's easier to blame it on just getting a flu shot the week before. lol It probably hasn't helped that I have been struggling with having had to go cold turkey from one of the drugs I had been taking for nerve pain. The doctor did renew the prescription for a 4th of the amount that I had been taking. I can't bring myself to restart drug again. I will say that it made a difference with nerve pain, but I don't want to back though the past couple of weeks. I am going to see the doctor again on Thursday, and ask about alternatives.

I was told the age is 65.

The shingles vaccine was originally just for those 60 and over. Now it's 50 and over.

I hear ya there.

When my kids were in sports it was just a joke on trophy day and my kids knew it.
Do these political correct people with all there feel good coddling crapola thought process really believe they are helping these kids?

My kids threw their trophies away cause they meant NOTHING to them cause they weren't in first place.
They didn't EARN their trophy.

My kids have been taught about the REAL world so the disappoints they go through won't be as hard as the other kids whose Parents teach them 4th place is just as good as 1st.

When those kids who believe that everyone gets a trophy is right from their Parents get out in the REAL world and find out you have to EARN REAL AWARDS they are going to not be ready for rejection.

Is it any wonder why so many in Washington State as well as the rest of the country feel they are ENTITLED to this and that when they haven't earned it?

Not hard to see where some of that thought process comes from.
