Yep, had 3 broody hens gave one of my hens 6 eggs and got 2 chicks, another had 8 eggs and I got 3 chicks, one was a small hen and couldn't get more than 4 eggs under her,, I gave her 6 but she broke 2 and 2 were rotten--- The very first chick that hatched may be a rooster, its 5 weeks old now, we'll see....I'm my way out to "hit up" the TSC I just found out we have over in Deer Park! I tried to post an ad on FBMP and got myself banned for posting to "not sell a , breaking both the not intending to sell rule and the you can't sell animals rule simultaneously.
My lesson has been learned and next time I let one of the hens hatch eggs, I will give them more than 6! They crushed/killed 4 of them and then 1 looks like it won't hatch, looks only half-full.
One of my hens raised a single chick last fall and that chick did just fine. She is a regular layer now.No luck at TSC, I was shocked when it came up in a Google search, but the "now open" flags and half empty shelves tell me it's a new store! But, no chicks. I can't seem to find any anywhere and I'm not spending $70+ on ordering 3 chicks to ship next week, I will just do my best to help my White Cochin raise the baby as a singleton and hope for better results in the next go round. Is it silly of me to put empty under my other broody again? She rejected the fertilized eggs last time I gave her some, but she has been sitting in an empty nest now for like 6 weeks and will NOT break!
@ValerieJLet me know, @Smokerbill, when you realize that two roosters are too many for your small flock. I might take one.![]()
I would prefer to have the loser, in that case. That is the calmer rooster.@ValerieJ
Perfect timing. I don't think I can handle two roosters, so if you want one you can have it. I was seriously considering turning one of them into stewmeat a little while ago. LOL
All day long one of them was crowing. Started before 5AM, and kept it up most of the day. Then around 6:30 when I was working on a project nearby they got into a knockdown dragout fight. Actually, it was one sided. The dominant one was destroying the other. Chasing, pecking, pinning him down and trying to yank out neck feathers... Dang!
The massacre only stopped with the losing rooster stuck his head in a hole and played dead. Must've been totally freaked out.
I went in the run and poked him with a stick. He didn't move. Then I picked him up, inspected him closely, but didn't see any real damage. No ripped skin, no blood. Didn't even see that any feathers were ripped out. Maybe just his feelings were hurt.
So yeah, I'm getting rid of one. Maybe both. I might not be cut out for the excitement of having hormonal roosters. Hens are so much more peaceful.
I locked the loser up in the coop. The other one is spending the night in the run.
