Even though I was born over on the dry side of NE Oregon, some of those commercials just remind me of when I was growing up. Socks and sandals? Done that. Playing at the beach in the rain. Done that because parents could only afford rates in early spring. So we went to Lincoln City in early March. Playing in the ocean and rain in a swim suit while there are people walking along the shore bundled up against a blizzard.

'Hello Kitty' chick got her little feets soaked in olive oil and the band-aid orthopedic boots slipped off without pulling. The toes are alligned perfectly. And in less than 24 hours! She is looking and acting like a normal chick. She was picking at her own toes for a few minutes like she didn't recognize them. When she nipped her self a little too hard she stopped.

You are more than welcome to bring your DH over here so that he can see the pull out drawers for himself. We should plan it for a weekend that my DH will be home, because that way I know that my DH can answer any questions that your DH could ask. I should post some pictures of my coop. I still haven't seen another coop like it. Of course when I manage too hit my head on the roof's overhang the other day, I wasn't thrilled with the design of the coop at all.

It took a couple of hours before I realized that I now have a very bruised eyebrow.

Not going to show or breed them for sale. They are my pretty incubators that I like to cuddle against their will. DH really doesn't like their looks or size. I have the four I got from you, and three 13 week old chicks from one of the hens that I hatched out. Two girls and a boy. The blue rooster already has already put the little cuckoo boy to work on guarding the flank side of the flock. Did figure out why the girl has spots of white and black skin on her. She is apparently a splash cuckoo with all the issues that the cuckoo brings in black skinned breeds.

I'm not sure about breeding and showing birds. Maybe in the future I might try it, after I understand how to breed for specifics better. I can see the difference in body shapes between the different breeds. My hatchery EEs have body shapes all over the place, and only a few get close to the ameraucanas on it.

I'll let DH know about your offer to see the coop. We have so much going on for the next month or so of weekends, it wouldn't be until a later date.

I'm hoping to have a few birds for your next processing day that you do next year. My back will be better by then, it's just taking a while to get back to normal.

Well I just got the coop mostly cleaned out and ready for the retrofit on Saturday. There was so much more litter in there than I thought!! They compacted a ton at the back of the coop. I must have skipped a shovel-out and added another bag of shavings because I took out 5 kitchen trash bags full of litter and still there was a couple inches left once I spread it out from the back of the coop. I left some until Saturday, don't want them crappin' on the linoleum. Only one more poop shelf shoveling and then I can rip that sucker outta there and make the long low roosts.

QUESTION: I have vents in the coop up high, and the pop door (which stays open full time) has an adjacent pop door (with hardware cloth over it) across from it on the other side of the coop. How much higher than these low vents should I make the roosts? I don't want a breeze coming through that pass-through and chilling them on the roosts. Maybe 8" above? I think the pop door is 18" tall and I don't want them to have to jump down too far. Right now the height they jump is ridiculous and someone's gonna get hurt

This was very interesting about your Clumbers. I have to admit that this wasn't a breed that I was familiar with. They seem to be another one of the all purpose farm dogs, and I am finding a few of these breeds now. I have a Bouvier des Flandres and maybe Birard mixed dog, and I am still getting accustom to a dog that seems to be able to do it all. I will say that I do miss my Komondor. The Komondor was so much less energetic in the house, compared to my Jetski. Are the Clumber's a high energy dog? It would be handy to have a dog that could round up the chickens without chasing them. lol

Ummm... just as sort of a "911 reply" ... how shall I put this... Clumbers were actually developed a few hundred years ago to locate and flush birds that were deep in thick thorny tough cover that the Springers and Cockers have to go around. They were bred to get the bird NO MATTER WHAT and all of ours are hunting dogs. We witness our own dogs diving headlong into the thickest, nastiest blackberry bushes and either flushing the Grouse, Pheasant, pigeon out or ambling back out with a very angry bird held firmly but gently in their mouth.

The incident we refer to as "The Back Fence Incident" that resulted in a dead hen also starred a couple of our dogs. Clumbers are dedicated hard-wired birddogs, and stubborn committed ones at that. Obviously we can't punish them for being interested in chickens, since they are birds. Instead we have to make sure that Fowlcatraz is secure on both sides of the fencing. That has been a learning process. I would never suggest that Clumbers, or any of the Sporting Group or Gundog breeds, as chicken herders. They are hard-wired to make the bird fly and then retrieve it to their person once it is down.

In the home, Clumbers are often very low-energy dogs BUT once they are working they are committed, stubborn, and spirited.

Did I miss a post somewhere? Chickie Lady has been missing for quite some time. Did she go on a vacation or something?

They are doing a barn raising. Currently putting trusses up.
