HELP!
I posted in the emergency section, but thought I'd ask here too. I hope that is ok.

DH and I where adjusting the tarp over the Spitz run this afternoon when I noticed the 13 week old cockerel huddled in the corner. The other two (also 13 weeks old) were freaking out because we were moving the tarp around and everyone was piled in the corner. Now the cockerel can't stand. He will grip my finger if I place his feet on it, and will pull his legs up under him if I pull them out while holding him. I felt around and didn't feel anything unusual. He has a full crop and otherwise seems healthy. I brought him inside, and he turns himself around using his beak and wings. He's eating and drinking. Any ideas what is going on? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Shyla

Buffy the buff Orpington squatted for me today! I've had her since the first week of August and she was supposed to be close to laying THEN. She's never been cuddly, so this is exciting to me

Cool, maybe you'll get a Christmas egg or a New Years egg!

Sounds like Coccidiosis. Is he still on medicated feed? Any unusual poops lately? I recommend treating with Corid immediately, huddling in a corner is usually cocci. I seem to have cocci issues occasionally (twice in 8 months) and Corid always rids us of it immediately.

I'm so sorry!

In research it seems the most likely culprit could be maraks.

check out this thread on how you can tell if it's maraks

Pic from tonight. We had fun with family celebrating Christmas #1. DH works on Christmas so we'll celebrate as our own family on Monday, and I'll go to my sister's with the kids on Tuesday.

Thank you everyone for your advice and sympathy. I'm just sick - I was watching for a racoon or possum, working on getting a trap, and was so unprepared for the hawk.

Frodo is hanging in there. I finally put her to bed. She stayed with me all day and is doing so much better than i expected. I got electrolytes down her and some scrambled eggs.

The hawk sliced her head at the base of the skull from under her left eye around the back of her head and ends under her chin. There is a flap hanging that should be connected to her head. I don't see how I could possiby stitch it, for one the missing skin is just that - missing. I don't know where I'd attach the bottom flap of skin. Not to mention she'd not sit still for it!

thank you all for your well wishes.

I'm so sorry for all who have lost birds lately. Seems to be a bad year for it.

Greg, I love that story and read it to my DH again this year. I may have to go read it to mom in the morning.

We're down visiting family for a couple days. Mom's recovering from back surgery, well they had an issue with the bone not holding and had to redo it, so two surgeries. She's doing much better and says she's getting feeling back in her feet.

I was talking to my cousin tonight and she's thinking about getting 3 or 4 hens and building a small coop. I gave her the website here so she can look at coop ideas.

Well yes we managed to get the big cages from cmsdvm. I didn't expect them to break the wheel on my big hand truck. Since Cynthia wasn't home I figured it was like a free shopping spree for any birds I may like. It was so nice of her son to help me catch and load my take.
Thank you to JB and her DH for their help. I woulda had to do some creative riggin had I been alone.

Just got back a few minutes ago from a short meeting with Turtlepower. He is helping me smuggle a piggy into the Portland area. Was nice to meet him and thank Travis for helping.
