Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Jerky rooster decided to take a chunk out of Mongos earlobe today. Mongo will be ok. Cleaned him up and put stuff on it.

We'll be eating jerk chicken in a few days. He's resting in the fridge.

It was nice and quiet this evening. Thought a hawk that was hanging out today got one of my brahma pullets. They are always so good on going to bed on time. Found her in one of the carriers just nested down. She gave me the "What?" look.

Sorry about all the hawk attacks everyone has been having. We've had a huge reduction in rodents around here lately and I think the hawks are looking for different food source now.

Latte has really kept us guessing. Her voice is lower, like Blackie's. She does have a masculine looking face to me, too - even if her comb is very tiny. We have been at such a loss trying to figure Blackie and Latte out 100%. We weren't even 100% sure with Cocoa and Rocha, either, but we made the call on them because they were becoming too protective of Blackie and Latte and attacking my hand every time I tried to get them out of the brooder or put food/water in. Although, I loved Cocoa and Rocha's spirit - they were so much fun to watch. They grew to become my favorites. If Blackie and Latte weren't around, they didn't put on their protective act and were extremely personable. They were silly, active and when I held them, they seemed to love it (unlike Blackie or Latte, who are both extremely timid and scared of being held). Cocoa and Rocha started getting what we thought were saddle feathers - but again, weren't 100% positive they were saddle feathers. We're just too new at all this to know what we're looking for. I wish they hatched with birth announcements telling us if they were a boy or a girl!

We got about 2" of snow in about 45 minutes this am. It has stopped snowing .We had a low last night of 23 when I got up at 4 and a high of 33. It has just dropped back to 31 now. Everybody stay safe and warm. we are going to DW's sisters for awesome homemade Chinese food. I decided that since there may be people out who have been drinking we will leave the little car home and take one of the bigger trucks. The car is plastic REALLY it's a Saturn. The trucks are good American STEEL !!!

So everybody be careful and have a Happy New Year !!

I just finished washing off the patio - that might not have been the smartest move, eh?

Didn't really think about how cold it was.

We're staying home tonight. My sister-in-law popped over and is hanging out, too. They're eating yummy food made with eggs, so I'm hiding out and trying to avoid smelling it. Aaaagh!

Happy New Year everyone!

I didn't have any kind of predator attacks until 2 years ago. I went two full years without a problem. I have had two dog attacks, coyotes got two and a bobcat got one. My son saw a large bobcat last evening walking through our back yard. I do not take any chances anymore. I am out there when they are out.

Since the eagles have seemed to disappear, I backed off on being on guard. Maybe I should be more careful again. My three big girls like to hang out in the middle of the lawn and my light brahma stands out like a sore thumb.

From late summer until deepest darkest...we have migrating birds here.
They come south, and look for food.
They also bring with them, different diseases and parasites.
This repeats every spring, when migrating fowl come back north...what you fight today, you will no doubt fight again this very day next year, and so on.
Mark it on your calendar for 2013~~~~~~~~~~~and be ready next time.
Coopers hawks and Sharp shined are bad right now, all coming south for winter.
G'night all !!

Yeah now that you mention that aspect she's more like a pullet. Her comb just looks so masculine to me, even with a pea comb! I'm just used to "pure" bred chickens is all...mine are all hatchery "pure" breds

Latte's comb is about the same size as my pullets that are 3 weeks older. I am sure if Latte and Blackie were right next to each other, it would really be noticeable. And thanks about my injured girl. We spent a good half hour looking in the bushes just off the property for the other 2. Hope they come back.

Like I said, it has to do with coloring. I bet if you posted the pics of those two in the gender forum asking for sex help, they would say the same as I have. I really believe Latte is a pullet, and Blackie is a cockerel. You should just post it there to see? I spend a lot of time in that section for educating myself on color/pattern sexing.

Well, the other 2 teens we thought were missing were in the tops of the nestboxes. You can only see up there from below. They roosted on top roost with the big kids on their own, a first. I think the hawk scare made them feel they can handle the pecking order stuff to get on top roost. Peep is resting, hasn't eaten or drank yet, but I don't expect her to til tomorrow when shock wears off. She does have a pretty full crop so she is good.

Glad to hear they are safe and sound. Keep us posted on peep!

Happy New Year everyone!

Not feeling very well since yesterday, so I am going to stay home, eat cough drops like they are candy, and get drunk on cold/cough syrup! Lol!

Hi CL! That quilt looks awsome! Hope the house is coming along too.

Got to meet Pacachick and her DH today. Very nice peeps! She took home some silkie eggs and hopefully can report back to me what her hatch number is.
I am not quite ready to hatch a whole bunch out yet, so she can be my tester for some of this years babies!

Well, I am off to take a nap and them watch a movie with DH. My oldest son says we are "LAME". Lol!
Goodnight, and be safe!
Hugs and good thoughts to you all!

Kim
