SEATTLE -- We're barely into this year's flu season and already the state Department of Health has reported three deaths related to influenza.

Two King County adult and a child from Pierce County have already died, and the number of people sick from the flu is on the rise in Snohomish County.

Getting the flu is a miserable experience, and if it hasn't already hit your house or office or child's school, experts say you should brace yourself, because it may be coming.

"We are having an early influenza season. And it's a serious influenza season and we've had a definite up tick in hospitalization," said Tim McDonald with the Snohomish Health District.

So far this season, Snohomish County hospitals have treated 52 people for the flu. During the same time last year, that number was four. It was zero the year before.

"It's a new strain, new to our population," McDonald said.

The increasing flu numbers aren't unique to the Pacific Northwest, either. The east coast, especially the southeast, has also been slammed. The flu will continue to spread into March.

Chances are you will come into contact with the flu bug at some point, but there are ways to avoid getting sick.

"I would urge everyone, not just for themselves, but for their friends, neighbors and relatives and their children to get vaccinated right away," McDonald said.

In addition to getting vaccinated, everyone should make sure to wash their hands often and keep sanitizer handy. And those who do get sick should stay home so they don't spread those germs to anyone else.

There is still plenty of vaccine available, and you can get it from your pharmacist, doctor's office or local health district. The vaccine costs about $15 for kids and $30 for adults, but in many cases you can apply for a reduced fee.

So I know that some of you use sand in your runs, and I think I remember that some of you use sand in your coops also. I would like to switch to sand for many reasons, but don't know what kind to buy. Can anyone tell me what would be the best type of sand to use?
We bought our sand from Corliss Resources. They are the local concrete dealer here on the plateau. So you should be able to find bulk sand at any of the concrete dealers in your area. They have clean sand in bulk. This only works as long as you have a truck that can haul a yard of sand.

Quote: We have found that pea gravel seems too work well in our exposed run area. The next time we do a full clean out, we are planning to use pea gravel throughout the whole run. The sand has been a bit of a pain about tracking out of the run.

I usuall just let it gently fall into a well placed wheelbarrow and take (feed/seed) to the coop. There I lift it to the top step, then up into the coop.
Open the bag put my feed container (small trashcan) upside down on top of the bag, gently lower the can with the feed bag to the floor. Tip the can up and pull the bag off and voila!, feed is in the can. No danger of hurting one's back, or getting a hernia or straining anything. I take it slowly, ain't no way at my age do I do things in a hurry anymore.

I like your idea! I have used my little red wagon more than once. It's always easier to manage when my DH is home though.

Hello Washingtonians! Hope all of you are doing great!

(HI Justbugged!!!!!! Longtime no chat chat with you....hope you are doing great!)

Quick question for you all....Does anyone here in WA know of anyone who breeds or anyone who has Blue Birchen Marans or Solid Black and Blue Marans that do not carry copper......or perhaps even a Blue Cuckoo Marans that lays nice eggs?
Thanks in advance!

How's everyone doing? It's cold here, no water, I think the pipes are frozen, so. . .

another use for a brooder lamp!
TC and anybody else with frozen water systems. IF you have your own well as it appears TC does. The most common place for it to freeze is the base of the pressure switch. That is the little box with the wire going into it. Normally if you slightly warm the little pipe going up into the switch and the base of the switch box. Keep in mind that there is electricity inside the box. Also the base switch also has a rubber diaphragm so don't use too much heat.

We never seem to have frozen pipes and electricity at the same time, at my house, so I try to keep a bag of good BBQ briquettes around.
While I am sure that SF has done this enough times she probably knows all the right things to do. How ever for those new I would caution you. First many of us now have PLASTIC pipes which don't take much heat. Also the idea of using lit charcoal in or under any building really concerns me.
BE CAREFUL !!!

Fast and furious sets the pace but slow and steady wins the race !!

For those looking into the tax deductions. I wish you luck. I did it when we had all the goats. I had a lot more expenses and made more with the goats than I ever will with chickens. That being said it was slightly worth it but for chickens 1) I don't know if most of us could qualify 2) I don't know if there would be enough gain to offset the hassle. But if you decide to try..... Good luck.

Just wondering if anyone has chicks that are two to three weeks old. I have a single chick that hatched from a broody first time mom. It ended badly and I have a single chick who is driving me crazy. She needs a little friend. If anyone has an extra chick about that age please let me know.
