My EE Janis was in the nest box a long time today and I was getting worried. Finally she made her song and I checked on her. My EE just laid a 83.5 gram egg! My other EE's lay eggs in the 44 gram range. 83.5 gram blue egg from my EE. Talk about wanting to breed that one, now I really want to hatch some of her eggs.

TC and anybody else with frozen water systems. IF you have your own well as it appears TC does. The most common place for it to freeze is the base of the pressure switch. That is the little box with the wire going into it. Normally if you slightly warm the little pipe going up into the switch and the base of the switch box. Keep in mind that there is electricity inside the box. Also the base switch also has a rubber diaphragm so don't use too much heat. While I am sure that SF has done this enough times she probably knows all the right things to do. How ever for those new I would caution you. First many of us now have PLASTIC pipes which don't take much heat. Also the idea of using lit charcoal in or under any building really concerns me. BE CAREFUL !!! Fast and furious sets the pace but slow and steady wins the race !! For those looking into the tax deductions. I wish you luck. I did it when we had all the goats. I had a lot more expenses and made more with the goats than I ever will with chickens. That being said it was slightly worth it but for chickens 1) I don't know if most of us could qualify 2) I don't know if there would be enough gain to offset the hassle. But if you decide to try..... Good luck.

Chicken rustler: I am raising goats, chickens, horses, pigs and cows! I think with the combination it is worth the hassle. I just don't know where to start. Stacy

Well I just wanted to hop on and let ya'll know that I got my chicks today!
The post office called me at 7am and let me know I could pick them up at 8:30 and when I walked in it was funny cause I could hear them chirping in the back room.
They are so very cute and I want them to be all feathered out right now so I can see what they are going to look like. I will add some pics later or tomorrow, I am being VERY lazy today and I do not want to get off the warm couch.

The basement is also full of quail and pigeons; not long for this world. I think he wants some pies this weekend. Not happening if the pipes don't thaw.

Ooooh yum...both quail and squab are very tasty birds!

I'm curious, where you get your pigeons? I'd love to try a pigeon pie somewhen.

Extending the roof on our pen today, yippee!!! Little by little we're moving toward a larger flock. 30% Bigger!!!! (one more)

We went to the Chehalis bird auction last weekend - sometimes get pigeons very cheap there. We bought 8, and 15 quail. I see so many people pass them up - they don't know what they are missing! I guess you do

Got my new weather station set up. Now I'll be able to see how nasty those gusts that we get are. I was going to put it up on the chicken run, but the temp sensor needs to be under cover and I couldn't get it in the right position to pick up the wind gauge. So temp is out front on the porch, and wind is out on the power pole and probably in the best wind location with nothing around it. I have the rain gauge sitting on the ground right now. I'm going to have to get a post to attach it to and raise it up.

Yummy! I've never tried stuffing bread like that. I'm certain DH would love it! I'm assuming you just roll it up that way before the final rise?

You're wine looks very pretty, too! I'm impressed by the label being so perfectly straight. When I label things they're always a little askew -- like me.

I want to replace my EE with a nice Americauna, I'm thinking I can do that in Monroe in April, so I'll be window shopping here on BYC in the weeks before the show. Plus I want to get something that is a real laying machine without being an overly large bird. A gold star is on my short list but that's not cast in stone. The sex-link I mentioned to you the other day would be nice, too, but not available. I'd love to have all 4 girls lay different color eggs but if two lay standard brown eggs I can live with that. Not sure I want white -- a white leghorn isn't high on my list. My priority for this one is quantity and reliability of laying.
