Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Kicked back watching TV and took this with my phone. Love it.

You got this chicken? From the knees down she is mine! Don't even think of crossing that line.

Hi all,

I live in Buckley and have five chickens. My ex gave me two chickens back in may 2012. The rhode island red has lost more than 60 percent of her feathers since Monday. Her back and belly are bare. If she molts this quick does she grow back the feathers quick? She must be cold as it's 40 degrees out....the other chicken my ex gave me started her molt in September and still loses just an occasional feather.

By the way, I had never been around chickens and boy did I fall in love with them. But my leader Betty the rhode island red is really ugly with almost all feathers gone. The other chickens kind of kept their distance today from her.,..

Spring is almost here...

And yes it sounds like she is just molting. I have a couple rocks that are doing that right now.

Well everyone, I thought Hope was getting better. Tonight, though, after I put all the chicks in the carrying box to clean the brooder, with a towel over it, I took Hope out after I was done. She did what she was doing a few days ago- Plopped under the heat lamp and fell asleep. I don't know what happened. I had just taken them off of electrolytes this afternoon and had put them on regular water. Now, I put them back on electrolytes, for fearing Hope would get worse. I don't know what too do. She is way smaller than the other chicks, and they all hatched on the same day. They are the same breed, same color, same size (Bantam) and the chances of them having the same dad is pretty high. I'm really worried about her. She is feathering in super slow, the other chick's wings are almost fully feathered and they are already growing little feathers on their feet. Here's a pic of her and sibs tonight, she's the smallest one:

When I have one chick that is smaller then the others I give it a boost. Taking it out for a half hour or so giving it sugar water (or a sports drink and water), and giving it scrambled or boiled egg.
I've also noticed an issue with some chicks i've had not growing very fast while on medicated feed. I have been searching to find a non medicated chick feed, or recipes for mixing grains that the chicks need.

When I am raising chicks I always give them Rooster Booster throughout their grow out time. It gives them electrolytes and vitamins they need to thrive. It only takes a pinch in a liter waterer. I also put it in all the waterers in the summer because even mild heat is hard on them. Like Sweetlilbaby, I have give the chicks chopped up boiled egg for the first week.

They are a week and a half now. I've never had an issue (like Hope's) with chick size and I've brooded over 6 batches of chicks. I'm keeping her on electrolytes for the time being and seeing if she gets better. The whole electrolytes thing is a first for me too. I've never *had* to use them like I do now.

Don't give up on her. You can keep them on electrolytes for quite awhile, so go ahead and give it to them. I give all my new babies Avia Charge for the first week or two then once a week for a day or two for the next few weeks. Give them scrammbled egg too. It's good protien. Keeping my fingers crossed!
