Believe me, I would love to do both. Just can't swing the gas for 2 long drives(just spent a couple grand in Hawaii on our free trip, remember

). And with dry weather forcasted, I got to get to building the pallet coops. Those I don't meet I am sure to meet at the Monroe show, I will likely be able to come to that. I have my DW interested in the PNPA show in Vancouver in April(which I didn't think she would want to go to). She wants to talk to Silkie Show peeps so she can decide if she wants to put the effort into showing or not. It would be nice to add Show Quality to our Breeding program.

Not sure I can get DH to come along; will try.
Maybe I can find some containers for chick feed and scratch there.

So, I may be just a crazy person, but I don't vaccinate and do not plan on doing so with my chickens. I am a huge fan of ACV, and can understand the need for medication. Are there others out here who choose not to vaccinate their flock? Just curious how their flocks do....

Hey there, I don't have much time to read thru this forum, but interested in how much apple cider vinegar you put in water? Also, I don;'t want chickens that are vaccinated. We've got TWO people in my family with vaccine damage, and I don't like to vaccinate anything anymore (was once a beleiver...). I saw someone else who adds chili powder to their feed, and all sorts of tricks to keep chickens healthy. So far we have zero health problems from my semi-free-range chickens, and I sure don;'t want any. I'm planning to get a +more hens and another rooster. I'd like to be pointed to any tips to keep them healthy.

So far they are on organic feed and I am going to try out the Patriot Feed No corn, no soy blend and see how that works. I give oyster shell. Other than that, free range and whatever organic fruit and vegetabel scraps we give them. Occassionally they get leftover bread, etc. I've had my mini-flock for a year, no health issues and hoping to continue the trend! Any tips welcome!

One of my EE's laid a long pointy egg today too, after a long break since molting earlier this fall. Glad to be getting green eggs again. Makes my egg basket a little brighter.

Mine laid a blue egg on Thanksgiving and stopped producing until last week too! We were down to 2-3 eggs, at the MOST daily. So glad we're back to 5 eggs a day now- yeah! That's impressive, given I only have 5 hens.......and one somewhat lazy rooster...

Hey All!

I'm in Tacoma too, & I would love to attend a south end meet! Ikea sounds like a blast! But I won't be able to until closer to the end of tax season. It's bizarre that I even got off as early as I did tonight. 70 hrs/wk really kicks ya where it counts...

My little chicks are growing so fast! I may have a roo in the bunch... I'm hoping not. City limits forbid it!! And my big girls are getting their wattles (I think that's what they're called), and one of em is even "reddening" up a bit! Oooh buddy!

Also, if anyone has any fertile eggs they would be willing to donate or discount for my daughters science fair project, I would greatly appreciate it. Otherwise we'll be making salt & sugar crystals. That's so not as fun! I'm more than willing to give the chicks back once they've hatched. Please PM me! I can pick up.

Wish me luck, 36 work hours left in the next 3 days. :-/

My poor chickens miss me. I neglect them all winter.

I just went out to spend some time in the run with them and they were ALL.OVER me! Super cute...except for Pip. She's a brat and bites my legs. I don't know what her problem is but she's likely the first chicken to go if I need to get rid of any ever. She won't let me hold or pet her no matter what, she hates physical contact, yet she is sneaky and always comes up behind me when I'm busy and bites my legs through my pants, or if I'm bending down she bites my back between my pants and shirt. WTH? It's driving me crazy. She's the worst and I don't know what to do about her. But I have tiny bruises on my legs from her and it's really obnoxious. Anybody want a Welsummer?

If my kid chooses to do an embryology science project... does anyone have 12 fertilized eggs they'd like incubated and will you take the newborn chicks off our hands within a day or two of hatch? We can't have and don't want any more chicks than we already have. His project is due March 8, which means we'd need to get going on this in early Feb since it takes 21 days to hatch.

We have two small incubators and can run a science project titled "Will rotating eggs have an effect on hatch rate"? Since half of the eggs will not be rotated, we wouldn't want to use expensive breeds. But, we would want something that someone wants chicks of.

Anyone?
