I just built one it turned in to two. The only thermometer that i found was on incubatorwarehouse.com thermometer/hygrometer $14.00 but it not very accurate the temp was low by 5 degrees hope I didn't cook my eggs. Lowe's had one without a probe for $9.00 that seems to be allot more accurate i cut in a Plexiglas window so my girls can watch the hatch. Kayla's science fair project has turned into an obsession for her contractor (Dad). A good place to get a nice big ice chest for pennies is a sea food store we got two pretty big one for three bucks. Incubator warehouse has all the parts if your interested I picked up a thermostat that works really good from them it may sole you heat problem. We are using a 40 watt bulb with the thermostat it works good. Amazon also sell them but most of the come from Inc. Ware. Let me know if I can help, my headaches may a benefit for you. Lol Just message meHey Turtle- FYI- ingesting nettle is a way different thing that being stung by it. I hate nettle stings! Nettle is a natural anti-histamine. Try googling "nettle leaf anti-histamine" if interested. I use it because it doesn't make ya sleepy. (I did lots of studying on histamine since ALTE's from pertussis vaccine reactions cause lasting histamine dysregulation).
Hubby is making me an incubator today out of an old ice chest. He's got it all put together, but the light bulb is too hot- we thought it was a 25 watt, but not sure now. Anyone know where to get a cheap thermometer with probe? So far the only thing we've bought is the thermostat![]()
Snuggle time is the best. I'm glad you guys were able to mellow with some good Sprout. My grils don't watch Sprout anymore but Snuggle time is still cool.Tiny people are in bed now and I am relaxing. What an evening. William could have been renamed Mr. Cling with how awful he was feeling. So I just sat and relaxed with him watching Sprout before he went to bed early. He napped ON Isaac earlier and that was it because he has a cold and fell asleep before lunch, doh!
Just built a couple. All the info I've seen says three. There are some very cool articles here with plans to build incs. and hatching eggs in the learning section. We did more research for my daughters science fair project and most of it says the same as the peeps on BYC but they are not as cool as the BYC peeps. Message me if I can helpI would just like some opinions here...
I am thinking about buying or making an incubator soon. I would prefer to go with the manual turning option, so my question is what is the least amount of times you can turn eggs a day?
I work and would only be able to do it once in the morning and once in the evening.
I would like to hear what you all think.
Thanks!
Fun and not-so-fun times today.
For the not-so-fun: I still have to go out to the run, get Rhodie and put her back into the coop. The big 'ol-chunk-o-Drama discovered that she could sit in the pop door and refuse to let Blackie and Latte go in the coop. When we moved her, Rhodie ran out to attack, and was attacking pretty hard. As luck would have it, the automatic pop door went into it's closing cycle, and she, Blackie and Latte were locked out. So, DH and I took Blackie and Latte out of the run and put them in the coop through the clean-out door and left Rhodie stuck in the run to cool off. That was a couple of hours ago. Guess I better go deal with her now. Wish I didn't have to go back outside tonight.
And for the fun: The experimental eggs are in the bators. They have been documented, photographed, candled and set. My kid is very excited. In the candling process we found 2 with significant hairline cracks, so we took those out of the bunch, cracked them open and photographed them. Both appeared to be fertile, and one even appeared to already be developing a little bit. That was pretty cool for my son to see. He couldn't believe that was the start of a baby chick. He's pretty excited. The "not-turned" eggs won't be turned with exception of every few days when we take them out to candle them. We bought an egg candler and the little bugger works well. Now, in the name of science, we finally have an egg candler.![]()
That's awesome!! I can't wait to see pics. Post them soon!!
I hope that silly chicken learned her lesson having to be outside for the evening.
