FYI, if you get hatchery birds they will be smaller than the SOP weights. I will always have Rocks in my flock from now on. Great temperament, fabulous moms, and just down right pretty. My hatchery BR weighs about 5lbs and my BO's are 5 & 6lbs, SOP says should be around 8-9lbs, so they are a medium size bird. My rooster is from a breeder of English and American Orps, he is about 12lbs. He is nearer to the correct size.

I had two Australorps go broody  last summer. they were great moms. can't remember what kind or how many chicks they hatched. I borrow the fertile eggs :jumpy  I had a broody hen in June, July, Aug, Sept. and Oct and 17 chicks at one time.

So it's looking like whatever I can find is what I'll get and will just hope they are broody  I want the larger breeds though, so when they stop being productive they can go to the freezer .......... Does anybody raise meat birds, or are they all used for eggs? Don't want to bum people out, by talking about meat birds....

So, I finally canceled TV! I've been wanting to do it for awhile but kept putting it off. It's an addiction that's hard to part with but I think I've hit bottom due to all the uber-irritating commercials! DD was not happy I didn't wait until Once Upon A Time was over, but oh well! We will keep Netflix and may get either HuluPlus or Amazon. It will save a few bucks and hopefully help me get motivated to do other things.

We canceled our tv and Internet ... 3? years ago. We ended up going to radio shack and getting a $39.99 antenna and now we get Q13 fox and sometimes 5 tbn (trinity broadcasting network) channels. Works for us, as the library is close and has all the movies/shows we want. :)

I figure even a 5-6 lb bird is better than a store bird .... I just found out last night that a family I babysit for has BR's and BO's and sex links and I don't remember what else she said. I'm hoping I can talk her into selling me some kiddos, or she can tell me where she gets hers from. It's crazy to me how many people have chickens that don't have stories to tell about them, to anybody who will listen .... That will be me ... "I know I just passed you on the street, but listen to what my crazy birds did the other day ...."

Must be too beautiful outside for anyone to chat! John is outside with 2 neighbor boys playing in the backyard throwing sticks and rocks in the creek. Jeanine just woke up but she's such a home body like her mama that she still doesn't want to go outside in the sunshine LOL As soon as William wakes up I'll take him out though, way too awesome out there to miss out!

I just came in to eat something. It's so pretty out. I managed to get a few pictures of birds. Even a hummingbird. :D Reminds me i need to bring in the feeder and clean it.

I remember growing up and my mom was a single parent of 4 girls. She somehow managed to afford to keep my horse and put me thru 4-H and shows. If I can do this one thing for Hanna, I will feel like I have touched a family :-)
Single mom to four girls! That's an amazing woman too. There's nothing better than giving back.

Hey Jordann! Welcome to BYC & this thread. I have three BRs and 2 BOs that I got from a guy in Fall City, he charges $3 for day olds, and has older birds for a little more if you don't want to have day olds. Here's the link to his CL ad: http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/grq/3600946138.html Looks like he has some 6wk old BRs for $9. He also pretty much guarantees pullets, and if you do get a roo, he'll take it back.

I absolutely love them, they are so much fun. The BRs were my favorite as chicks, but the BOs are growing on me now that they aren't completely chicken of me. hehe... Check out my pics in my profile and you'll see them as hatchlings and older. So far they are good size, the BOs look like they will definitely outgrow my BA's & my EE! I got them as dual purpose birds. They are too young to lay but I'm sure they will produce well... or they'll be winner winner chicken dinner.

hello everyone,
I have a silkie that is laying a few eggs. I have three in my incubator but they are to far along to add more. I do not know if they are fertile that is way i am hatching out some, so I want to offer the extras I have to someone, if interested please pm me. I have two roosters in the pen so not sure what colors you will get.

Thanks,
Richard

Ok, I am home! Went and had a great time at CR's place with my friend. Got to meet CR, his DW and Mikey! I had such a great time. All three of them were such great and SWEET people to be in the company of. heard many many stories and had some good laughs.
We made it there in and hour and a half, and thought we left in time to get home for the kids. Then it was already 3 before we even got back to Seattle. So glad my SIL was home and able to get most of my kids from their bus. I got to our street right as the bus pulled up and so was able to make it just in time to pick up my other DD from school (stayed after for student council meeting) and then back to my house before our other DS's bus dropped him off at our front door.
CR and his DW made us all lunch too. Man I never thought road kill could taste so darn good. Plus I got to see the great and all mighty Fudge in person, if my pockets were bigger and CR would have turned his back, I would have at least made a go at grabbing that boy. LOL
Bought some beautiful pullets from CR, and they are all nice and tucked in to their temp home until it is time to put them out with the flock.
Thank you so much to CR, his DW and Mike for such an awesome time. Sad that we had to leave so soon. Ya'll are my kind of people.

On another note, the chicken that I could not decide if it was a pullet or cockerel...... Well this morning (before leaving for CR's place) I caught him doing the deed with one of the ladies. Funny thing is though, he still has not crowed yet! But at least I know what it is now and that he will be going by by soon!

Just had another chicken buddy awesome day. See Farninmama and her

friend. She fits right in with me.

came down to get some birds from me and Mikey came out too. What a great time I had. I made a bit of a lame lunch. Farmin had to run about 1:30. I was able to distract Mike and keep him here until nearly 4:00

I enjoyed this visit SOOO much I hope the others did too.
After all were gone DW started cracking up laughing. She said she really likes FM and thinks she is soo funny! While she will say if she likes people. It is not often that on first meeting she is so forward about her feelings.
