Hey one needs moving target practice too ya know!! OK no I would not really do that. In fact I have 2 cockerels that are getting a one way bus ride in the morning.

The bus departs our farm and only stops at the sale barn.

Sadly, my coop is not going to be done for Christmas. Ah well. After tomorrow, construction will take a break for the holidays. (I'm sick and tired of painting anyway!) Maybe I can impress people by saying it took two years to build, lol. I really look forward to reclaiming the garage!! Hopefully it'll all be done by the end of January. I took this pic a couple nights ago while painting. It was after 10 pm, and the Polish had gone to sleep on one of the 2X4s in the coop, and I think the silkie just didn't know what to do with herself since her friend was "gone". She followed me around as I painted the exterior, and almost stuck her crest in the paint a few times.

Oh, I did make the Polish a friend for life. I gave her some crumbs from a chocolate chip cookie (not the chocolate though). She wouldn't leave my side while I was in the garage! Silly birds. I'm working on warming her up to the white silkies. She will forage with the blue, and Lamont said that she was grooming the blue this week when they were both out. She is still very upset when she sees while silkies, so I've been letting the Polish and blue out and then putting the 3 whites in the blue's cage with the door latched so she can see them but not peck them. I had to leave a few times and put the blue in with the whites (silkies sure don't move around much, do they?) and they shared the dog crate just fine. But I don't trust the Polish not to give them a good peck on the head. So I'm going to buy another dog crate and put the white silkies in it right next to her. I'm kind of glad they won't all be going in the coop for another month. The whites don't have feathers under their wings yet. Hmm, maybe for the last couple of days of coop building I can bring in the 3 hatchery chicks as well and they can all get used to each other in the garage. I had to take Tandoori to her new home today (her new owners are going to Peru to explore the Amazon in a couple of weeks), so I won't be able to shake up the pecking order again before integrating everyone. The garage will probably smell awful with 8 chickens in it, but it needs a thorough cleaning anyway....

I would never suggest that Clumbers, or any of the Sporting Group or Gundog breeds, as chicken herders. They are hard-wired to make the bird fly and then retrieve it to their person once it is down.

In the home, Clumbers are often very low-energy dogs BUT once they are working they are committed, stubborn, and spirited.

You are sooo right about the hard-wiring!!! My silly Cocker is OBSESSED with the chickens (so is my ShepX, who would love to eat them)!! She will just stand frozen as if in a trance and watch them! I've tried desensitizing them, albeit half-heartedly. The cocker when allowed to sniff, just trembles with anticipation of a flapping freak out!

Wow, I was completely unaware of what had gone on this moring untill now.
This is just one of the many, many reasons I always carry! Our world and may people are falling apart in a lot of ways.
This stuff also makes comments that I get while carrying (like at bothell feed center last Saterday) more frustrating. Me carrying may make some people unhappy, but they would be singing a different tune if they were by my side if anything like this happend where I was.
My thoughts and love go ut to all the friends and family that habe gone through these and many other shootings.

PACKIN in public YOU ROCK !!!!! As long as you do regular practice to be accurate. I firmly believe if we had more people packin it could really decrease the losses at things like today.
And for anybody with the opinion of make guns illegal you are entitled to that but remember DRUGS ARE ILLEGAL and they are still a huge problem.

YES! I was just talking about this with FM on FB and here's what I wrote:
Taking away gun rights will only cause MORE of these incidents; bad guys don't exactly look at the law and say to themselves"Oh, that gun is illegal now. Perhaps I'll pursue another crime." NO, taking away GOOD peoples' gun rights only makes it that much easier for criminals to get away with their crimes and harm the innocent. I tell you one thing though, there's a special place in hell for that man and he's already living it.

Just pray for the families who lost their babies today; it's a senseless tragedy and I don't understand it, but I know God can comfort in all things, even this.

I'm sitting in the living room with eyes peeled on the mailbox. Waiting for the mailman to arrive so he can give me William's glasses! I'm super excited for him to wear his very first pair and finally see stuff!!! DH took the keys with him to work on accident so now, here I wait. Bleh.

I am so glad to hear from realistically thinking people!!!! It would be so nice to just go thru the grieving process without hearing the stupidity of the media and people who think taking away a form of protecting our families is going to make these tragedies stop.

It feels like I've been crying all day, though, it started just before finding out about this. All those poor little angels and all those destroyed families....

I gave her a few things to think about along with how stupid it is to ever reach for someones weapon.
Other times I have been told that women like me that think they should carry are whats wrong with this world, and that was coming from a woman.
I have had people grab their kids while staring at my gun and go the other way.
Had 5 male employees of FredMeyer follow me around the store, watching my every move. Glad I didn't need to try ant thing on.
Been told that I was dangerouse and irresponsible for owning let alone carrying a gun with my children by my side.
I always have a few choice words for these people. It is one thing to have your own opinion about it and even bringing it to my attention is fine as long as you are respectful about it. But no one ever is nice about it!

Thanks guys. At first I didn't like them but they're growing on me because of how much I know they match his personality; they just HAD to be red...we spent over 2 weeks looking for red ones. Plus, these make him look a bit like a goofy superhero and he's SO that kid! LOL

If another Oregonian might opine, we were talking today at work about the anticipated drive to regulate our guns, I suggested if we just make murder illegal maybe there won't be a problem.
On the chicken topic, glad to find a local (I am in Astoria, Oregon, just over the Columbia river from Washington) thread and glad to hear the opinions on heating coops. I am starting with Orpingtons, I do have a question, now that I am assured about the cold (rarely below 24 here), what about the rain. Do I need to provide special coverage, both my coops have covered runs but they will have access to my free range yard. I think someone did mention that chickens have survived for a long time but do I need to provide anything extra. I have a deck they can shelter under & shrubs and bushes. Should that do? I guess if they don't like the rain they will do what I do & stay in.

They should be provided with a place that is out of the rain and sheltered from wind. but yet have good ventilation.

Perhaps I would not recommend a gun dog as a flock protector, but it is not true that they are hard wired to be unsafe around chickens.

2 imported Springer Spaniel gun dogs here. One welsh, one English. The English has 6 generations with every dog on the pedigree a field trial champion, except the dam who is an open field trial winner. The Welsh has a pedigree full of dogs that worked the gun. Both hunted over extensively. They will work pheasants and quail and retrieve dove. Neither one bothers poultry, rabbits, or has much interest in the tweetie birds.

They are hard wired to be very selective about what game they hunt. A hunting dog is completely worthless if it goes after anything that moves. Gun dogs can be trained quite easily to leave the poultry alone. As with any dog, they must be trained and it is much easier to train them before their first chicken chase.

I've owned 4 different breeds of sight hound and they were all used to hunt. They also can be trained to leave poultry alone and to hunt only designated game and they won't chase anything else.

Any dog can be trained to leave poultry alone. All dogs, no matter what the breed, are not going to be safe around poultry until after they have been trained to leave poultry alone.

The reason I would not recommend a gun dog as a poultry guardian is that many of them are small enough to be a coyote's dinner, and the larger ones are not large enough to fight off a small pack of coyotes. If a gun dog is well bred, he will be too soft mouthed to kill small preditors and what are you going to do with a live mink if your dog hands it to you?

Hi There, and welcome to the grouop!

You've said you have a covered run and a coop for your orps. If they are free ranging and still have access to the covered area, that's fine. My girls can go back and forth at will. When the weather is not to their liking they stay under cover. The ground is damp but they don't get rained on. Their feathers a like little rain coats... much like the birds that just keep flitting about this time of year. They may be dumb but they're not stupid.
