Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

If another Oregonian might opine, we were talking today at work about the anticipated drive to regulate our guns, I suggested if we just make murder illegal maybe there won't be a problem.
On the chicken topic, glad to find a local (I am in Astoria, Oregon, just over the Columbia river from Washington) thread and glad to hear the opinions on heating coops. I am starting with Orpingtons, I do have a question, now that I am assured about the cold (rarely below 24 here), what about the rain. Do I need to provide special coverage, both my coops have covered runs but they will have access to my free range yard. I think someone did mention that chickens have survived for a long time but do I need to provide anything extra. I have a deck they can shelter under & shrubs and bushes. Should that do? I guess if they don't like the rain they will do what I do & stay in.

Hi There and welcome to our group!

Sounds like you have plenty of dry areas for your orps to get out of the rain when they want to. Mine will come back into the covered run when the weather isn't to their liking. They may be dumb but that aren't stoooopid.

(Did a quick round of chores this morning and took off north for an IKEA run, then went to Shipwreck for the first time this year. Merry Christmas Shopping!)

I wish I'd known.

I wasn't sure until I got up Thursday that I'd be up to it after having dental surgery Wednesday, but I actually felt much better almost immediately; getting a big occult infection removed and a (necessary and appropriate) prescription for antibiotics was an amazing experience. BUT also, since instead of filling all the feeders Wednesday afternoon and getting ready to leave as soon as I had my morning insulin, we had to feed and shoot up there and back to beat the main JBLM gate traffic at 4pm; not optimal visiting/coshopping experience.

Getting stuff for family presents was the primary reason we went. I got these really nice cream-colored one-pound pillar candles and little galvanized plant tubs like old washtubs and am going to use my surplus crystal beads to make a sort of soap-bubble looking fill around the candles, with random red and green facetted ones for Christmas-look? I think, I'll have to goof around with it a little, as well as figure out a weight-fill for the bottom two inches, although I believe I'll use chick grit for that.

Also last night Franklin and I did a strafing run of Macy's and got presents for the younger generation (and Franklin got his for me) on one of those deep deep discount sales. Miss Perfect has a guest registry that only a foody who's had her own subscription to Sunset and Better Homes and Gardens since she was eleven would come up with. Her Fiesta Ware was on sale cheap so we got some of that, and a Martha Stewart Spice rack for the guy with the beard and his fiance. Teaching my kids to cook starting when they were little simplifies Christmas Shopping, at least!

I've been watching the conversation about guns and just can't keep quiet any longer. I do not favor gun control and I've been around guns and hunting all my life. I've shot an assault rifle. But I'm not a fan of carrying guns around in public. IMHO it should be no surprise that a person carrying a gun is being watched/followed when inside a store. I would expect no less. After all, how do the people in that store know that person isn't the one that's going to go ballistic?

And I seriously doubt that in a time of panic and crisis an average person is going to have the where-with-all to calmly evaluate the situation and take out the "bad guy" without adding to the problem, such as hitting the person just beside, behind, or beyond the intended target. Can you visualize half a dozen people with guns at various places surrounding a "bad guy" all feeling they are the one that should "neutralize" him. People dashing around, pushing, bumping, darting. Maybe a couple of those six get bumped or just aren't as rock solid steady as they should be. Maybe they haven't practiced in a while (no law about how good a shot you have to be to carry), maybe they're adrenaline level is off the charts. Maybe the bad guy is moving. Odds are pretty high that this is going to go badly.

I'm not joining ranks with the woman who was being nasty, she was totally out of line. But I don't see carrying weapons in public places as the solution any more than gun control is the solution.

This is just my two cents on the subject.

Does getting rid of the infection effect your blood sugar?

Oh, :barnie, I forgot to test this morning. I've been way low two days in a row, and was reminded that my doc ALSO takes Fridays off. I've been having weird unpredictable ups and downs for months, and it will probably take a while to figure out if I need to reduce my insulin (I hope).

Mostly it's been a matter of having the hip, hand, and shoulder pain that had been constant and unreachable by any of the painkillers I've got going entirely away within twelve hours. WOW :weee except now I've been roaring around so much that I've relearned the meaning of healthy fatigue!

I am having annoying high sugar issues because I'm getting over a cold right now. It seems that I have to do 1.5x my normal dose of short-acting to fix it. Boo.

Being sick can often spike blood sugars.
I can never get mine below about 160 fasting normally.
I was sick most of the month of Nov. Stomach bug, and some weird head/throat thing. After 6 days of not eating or drinking, I was at 284. I think I give up. lol!

I would agree with you Carolyn.

I need to find homes for 1 or 2 banks of cages. I hate to part with them. These were old cages from my veterinary hospital, then I paid a welder to weld a metal bar in front so that I could attach water bottles and food bowls. I intended them for my seramas and for birds that needed to be in isolation after shows. However, we keep fighting a rat problem and my husband is convinced that the problem is that they are nesting under the cages since there is only a dirt floor in our barn. They are big, and HEAVY. 3 muscular guys carried them here originally. They have 3 kennels for small dogs on top, 2 for large dogs on the bottom. Standard veterinary issue. I would let my BYC buds have one bank or maybe even both (sigh) for free. You will need a truck or trailer and MUSCLE. PM me. They are dirty- as I have done nothing with them for a year.
