Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

@CR; of course you don't get to blow the whistle, etc. YOU ARE MARRIED. Everything you have is hers, and of course everthing she has belongs to her.
Did you not see the photos the other day about the Single guy, the Married guy, etc?

I lost princess buttercup last night. I think whatever scared the girls a couple weeks ago was back. (If you recall - I had to go get Frodo from the neighbor's yard(s) as she was so scared.)

I found her partially eaten when I got home last night. Just the head/neck area, I am pretty sure that I scared off the predator in the middle of dinner, I was only gone an hour.

And I'm pretty sure the predator was a possum.

We've seen one hanging out so I've been gathering eggs right away and putting feed in the coop at night, but this critter is not afraid at all. It's been there in the light of day a few times, and my chickens all freak out and fly into trees and make a ruckus.

So sad. I checked the fenceline for holes again this morning - nothing. It's getting over the fence.

I am looking at options...our yard is our run and the neighbor's dogs have kept out raccons, etc. in the past. It might be time to get a chicken protection dog. I don't know...I don't want to do anything rash but I don't want to lose anymore.

Sorry Dawn for your loss. I too lost a hen today, my broody BR. I assume it was a hawk. Feathers plucked out and no body. Found the chick with the flock on other side of the yard. So the chick is now in the brooder in the basement with the Silkies. Loosing birds stinks, but I know it does happen when they free range. I am planning on changing things when I build the 2 pallet coops in the next couple of months.
Quote: Well of course I don't like white eggs. I have been programmed not to. I don't get to say when the whistle blows or how far the train goes but let the dang thing jump the track and see who catches heck!!!!
I soooo wish I could come help you CR tomorrow. This is the first time my company is having us work on a weekend(because of the holidays). On another note, are you planning on keeping all your new hatched chicks. I am gonna need a started pullet in about 3-4 months when I reintroduce my BR/Orp mix chick back into the flock(so she is not the only new bird to take ALL the pecking order stuff). I would love to "rustle" one of your Marans

ETA: so the little orphan Blue chick is a Boy. Took a real good look at wattles and little red ones are coming in at 3 weeks. So CR, scatch the pullet "rustling". I am gonna put the little boy into the tractor once fully feathered with a little heat lamp(75W) and put it next to coop. Then will integrate him into flock like I did with my teen girls. He will eventually replace Pig Pen unless he ends up not nice. I can even start to see his light blue barring showing up on the wing feathers. Gonna be a good looking mix bird that I can work with the Blue Barring in my own flock(someday down the road I will have real Blue Barred Rocks)

Chickypoos~ I'm sorry, where did we meet? It's sometimes hard for me to match up screen names with real people :) It must have been at Ruth's or ThirdPlaceBooks?

I AM SUCH A GOMER (and apparently blind)!!!! It was my mistake in thinking you were Shyla!

When I went to bed late last night, my mind started running over things and it occurred to me that I remembered your avatar and you were not Shyla

Got a nice little Noble Fir from Jeff Schilter down in Nisqually. I wish I could start a trend for unsheared Doug fir, I love the scent and shape but nobody grows them any more, instead they all look like bottle-brushes.

And I didn't get rained on all day, YAY!

Sorry about the losses.

I haven't seen the raccoons in a few months around here. Then after the snow a few days ago, I had hundreds of paw prints on my deck. Guess they are hiding out and partying after I go to bed.

btw- I've had raccoons just take the head/neck.
Completely eat the entire carcass except the bones & feathers. Very bloody mess.
Just eat the guts.
And had a chicken just disappear with a raccoon, no blood just maybe 8 small feathers in the yard.

Never had a possum mess with then chickens, just the feed. i kind of think they are more predators of opportunity, rather than stalkers and killers.

I put it on parchment, on a cookie sheet. I wanted a slightly softer crust so didn't use the stone, but it baked crisp anyway!

You use butter (or oil) in the recipe, but the flavoured oils are for dipping - YUM!

Maybe sometime in the new year we can swap some starter?

Oh... Swaping Starters sounds fun, I've never had anyone to swap with before! I wonder how different they might be? I've read that there can be quite a lot of difference. It will be fun to find out! Mine came from my mother in 1975, and she got it from Fischer Flour Mills at a centennial celebration. They claimed it came from Alaska's Gold Rush, but who knows.

I've set some dough to try making a wreath tomorrow!!
