Well now even the darn in-coop water is freezing!! Apparently about 25 degrees is the point where the indoor water freezes too. So I was out there with a pitcher of hot water at 7am and try spent the whole time I was outside yelling at me to hurry up. Then half of them got impatient and went to the creek. I don't know I I like them drinking from the creek, I don't know what contaminants are in it! They haven't been having very solid poops since they found the creek...probably not getting as much AVC in them to keep it nice and firm. Blech.


CR- glad you could go help t-hi move, wish I could but with no can, or having to bring 3 littles, I wouldn't be very helpful

FWJ- I have been bringing waters into my shed and everything was fine until last night. Mine froze inside my shed last night. Might be bringing them into the garage tonight.

Lol! Yes I mean bring the waterers into the garage. I have too many chickens to bring them all inside. I have good coops and covered runs. They are fine outside. But I have bucket nipple waterers and they will need to be brought in until the temps get a little warmer.

I have to always have a backup water dish for my chickens becuae we have been getting so cold at night. It got down to 18 where I'm at last night. They have a heat lamp but they dirty their water up if its in there house. So every morning, I pull their waterer and dish to thaw and replace it with one with warm water.

And back to talking about my nesting buckets. My girls must haave heard my complains. This morning, I found 2 hen eggs and one pullet egg in the nesting bucket in the their house. I put the other three in there with fresh bedding. Also found 2 eggs in the dog house. Its kinda funny because the pullet egg I found in there was the egg in the nest she made. The hen egg was near the opening like she squatted, had her egg and continued on with life...hahahaha

Well- we figured out what killed my layer last weekend. A hawk. And it struck again today, killing 2 of my Bantams who were in a secure cage, with a top, and with my mom and sister home. We drove up the driveway and saw it flying from the scence. We thought they'd be fine as we were home and keeping a close eye on them- but we were wrong.

Well- we figured out what killed my layer last weekend. A hawk. And it struck again today, killing 2 of my Bantams who were in a secure cage, with a top, and with my mom and sister home. We drove up the driveway and saw it flying from the scence. We thought they'd be fine as we were home and keeping a close eye on them- but we were wrong.

I'm so sorry that you've lost even more birds. Might want to consider the 3S rule.

What is the 3S rule?

Well- we figured out what killed my layer last weekend. A hawk. And it struck again today, killing 2 of my Bantams who were in a secure cage, with a top, and with my mom and sister home. We drove up the driveway and saw it flying from the scence. We thought they'd be fine as we were home and keeping a close eye on them- but we were wrong.

How did the hawk get them??

The birds must have stuck their heads through the cage to fight. It was a Petmate cage used for dogs. I took the bottom off so they could enjoy the grass. When they stuck their heads through, it decapitated them. It didn't manage to get away with the bodies. Does anyone know if there's a legal way to kill hawks?

BTW- The layers are securely looked up now with me keeping a very close eye on them.

Yes, we understand that. But is there a way to get a permit? Or contact ODFW to do something? We will not do anything to the hawk of course until we figure out a way to do something legal about it.
