Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I remember the movie "The Egg and I," it was hysterical. I was pretty young when I saw it on tv and didn't care about movie stars but, I think Ma & Pa Kettle were in it - they were in alot of movies. Actually I guess that was their movie name, I don't know what the real names were.

Weird question, is it possible my hen that looked like she was attacked is just molting?   because in the crate in the garage she's lost even more feathers. I mean i filled a quart jar with her feathers so far that she lost since being crated.    it's just so weird for a hen to molt this time of year for me though.

She is going to be 6 years old this spring though.  I'm worried about her.   she's been such a good egg layer up til either she was attacked or began molting.  I post this here because otherwise i end up being told it's normal this time of year from people in other states and I know it's not normal to molt in mid winter here.

One of my rocks is molting very badly right now and another is just starting. I have an apron on the girl hoping to keep her a bit warmer. Apparently the temp doesn't bother her as she's been outside with everyone and has been getting fat.

Quote: Agree. Every night go out there after dark and put her on the roost where you want her. They can be trained without much effort. It might take a week of doing this but she'll learn where she's supposed to sleep.

I saw the movie on Amazon and thought about buying it; it's unrated though and I don't like having movies I'm not sure about in the house with the kids. Do you remember if it's clean? No language, sexual inuendo's (I'm sure there's none, that movie is old!), etc? I think it sounds like a great film! I was up late reading the book giggling, she's a very good writer. It much more exciting for me to read an authentic 1945 copy of the book too, keeps me entertained better than newer versions of books.

I'm so excited! I ordered our new chicks for Lucy. Now she won't have to worry about keeping egglets warm enough in these freezing temps and we'll get chicks regardless; if she won't take them, I'll brood them in the outdoor hutch, in the chicken run. I already have the brooder lamp out there!

Can I offer a stamp of approval and high recommendation for Eric Jonas at Seattle Farm Supply? He's a very friendly, very helpful man with great birds! His pullets are from Cackle Hatchery in Lebanon MO and they're always in great health, and they're pre-vaccinated so you don't have to worry about anything at all! I got 8 of my original chicks from him, and then 2 more (my 2 youngest Ameraucanas), and now I've ordered 5 chicks for Lucy. Instead of the typical waiting period so he can stabilize the chicks when they arrive to his house, he's allowing me to pick them up immediately so I can give them to Lucy. Anyway, he's always very helpful and has wonderful, healthy birds. I highly recommend his store!

I ordered 3 Barred Rocks, 1 Black Australorp, and 1 Ameraucana.

Sounds great. I am gonna give you the same advice M Best(Silkie Breeder) gave me about chicks under a broody. She told me to wait until at least an hour after sundown and to gently rub each chick on the hens under side of her wing, to get her scent on it, then place them under her belly. Do this in as dark as possible conditions so it keeps her in her "broody trance". She will be less likely to reject them. Also be out there at dawn to see if she accepts them or rejects any.

Sounds great I will do that exactly. I'm worried about doing it at night though. Won't the chicks stray away from her and she won't even know they're there to protect all night?

Question~ Just finished building a new coop for my girls. It is big enough for 20, but I only have 4. The 3 bigger girls wont let the smallest one in the coop. She is always shunned. Nobody seems to be picking at/on her, but she wont go in the coop at night, instead she sleeps all alone with her head under her wing under the coop in a corner. What should I do?
have you tried leaving a light on in the coop in the evening. She will most likely go to where it is lighter then once they have all gone to bed turn out the light.

re: The Egg and I, I don't recall any 'questionable' bits in the movie - I was very naive as a younger person and IF a movie had things like that they would just go right over my head. Considering how sanitized movies and later tv shows were - I think it's a safe bet. Maybe you could google it and see reviews.
